A young woman was the victim of a near-fatal random stabbing Saturday in Mississauga, triggering a plea for help from police.

Peel Regional Police said the attack happened Saturday at about 6:20 p.m. in the Eglinton Ave.-Hurontario St. area, where the victim had exited a transit agency bus and was followed by an assailant.

Police said a man stabbed the woman, who is in her 20s, in an unprovoked attack before fleeing on foot.
Listed in critical condition Sunday morning, the woman suffered near-fatal injuries, police said.
“At this time, it is believed that the suspect is not known to the victim and that this was random,” police said Sunday in a statement about the incident.

Police said the attacker is 5-foot-9 with a thin build, dark complexion, short dark hair with a receding hairline and a full beard. He wore black clothing, sunglasses, and he had a ring on his left hand and white wired headphones.
“If seen, members of the public are asked to dial 911 and not approach,” said police, who urged anyone with information to call 905-453-3311, ext. 1233.
