Woman gave out five love letters at summer camp, one recipient went on to become her husband

A woman who gave out five love letters as a joke at summer camp has revealed how one recipient ended up becoming her husband.

Meg Sunga, 35, from Orlando, Florida, was ‘obsessed’ with the Netflix film To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before in 2018.

So when she went to a costume party at an adult summer camp she was attending, she decided to dress up as the main character from the flick.

The movie, which is based off of Jenny Han’s novel of the same name, follows a high school girl who wrote love letters to her five crushes but hid them in her closet… until her sister accidentally mailed them out.

To complete her costume, Meg decided to write her own love letters and pass them out to a few of her fellow camp goers.

Little did she know, one of them, Lamar Waterman, now 40, would go on to become her husband.

‘Every camp hosts two themed costume parties. The first night was Netflix and Chill, where you were encouraged to dress up as your favorite TV or movie character,’ she recalled exclusively to DailyMail.com “

‘To All the Boys I Loved Before had just come out and I thought it was a great costume to do even though most people would probably have no idea who I was.

‘In honor of the main character, Lara Jean Song Covey, I decided to not only dress up like her character but create five fake love letters and give them to five fellow campers at camp.

‘While I chose a very niche costume, Lamar was dressed up as Black Panther, which was definitely a crowd favorite.’

Meg explained that she picked five people that gave off ‘fun’ vibes to receive the letters, but stressed that it was intended to be a joke and that she never expected to actually find love.

‘I chose Lamar because he was the life of the party and was easy to be around,’ she shared.

‘Whether it was hanging out at arts and crafts or chilling by the pool, Lamar had a chill vibe and while I thought he was cute, it was refreshing to be around someone who made me feel comfortable without the anxiety of expectation.

‘I remember I also gave one of the letters to Lamar’s best friend, Andrew Locke, who ended up being a groomsman at our wedding.’

As for what they said, she explained that she had picked out a set of cards from the dollar section at Target.

‘They were cards in the shape of bananas with the words, “You’re sweet!” on one side, blank on the other,’ she continued.

‘I don’t know if I wrote the same thing on all the cards but on Lamar’s (which he still has) it said, “My camp crush. XO, Meg.”‘

Lamar was completely entertained by the letter, and the two ended up growing pretty close during camp.

At the end of the session, Meg decided to give Lamar her number and they quickly made plans to ‘hang out.’

‘I remember not knowing if our hang out was an actual date or not but I was excited to spend time with him regardless,’ Meg said.

‘He asked if I would be interested in going to Universal Studios and that he had some free tickets.

‘I figured that at best, I had a great date and got to go to a theme park for free OR at worst, it would be a terrible date but I got to go to a theme park for free.’

Meg said the ‘conversation flowed so easily,’ and within an hour, it was clear that there was a ‘mutual attraction.’

‘Being with Lamar felt like hanging out with a friend you’ve known forever,’ she gushed.

Now, she said her husband – who still has the letter – jokes that it was all part of her ‘grand scheme to get him to fall in love with her.’

‘I promise you that was not my goal,’ she added. ‘It was all a part of my bit as Lara Jean Song Covey but I guess there was some unintentional manifesting going on.

‘I went to camp with the intention of having fun and meeting new friends. I made the letter as a part of a costume from a movie that I was obsessed with, I just wanted an excuse to dress up like Lara Jean because Asian female main characters are just so rare.

‘The fact that I found my life partner through a fake love letter is pure serendipity.’
