It all started when a 29-year-old woman planned an intimate, adults-only get-together at a nice restaurant in celebration of her birthday.
“It was meant to be a small, child-free — nothing wild, just a quiet, adult-only dinner with good food and conversation,” she explained on social media, according to a people.com report. “I made it clear on the invite that this was an adult-only event so that everyone could plan accordingly.”
One of her friends, Laura, a 31-year-old mom of a three-year-old daughter, originally inquired about bringing her child due to lack of childcare. However, the birthday woman politely declined, reiterating that she wanted the event to be adults-only.
Laura seemed to accept the request and said she would “figure something out.”

Then came the night of the dinner. Laura arrived with her daughter.
The Reddit poster recounted her surprise.
“Everyone is arriving at the restaurant, and Laura walks in, holding her daughter’s hand. I was immediately caught off guard but tried to stay calm,” she said.
She tried to address the situation discreetly, pulling Laura aside the chat about the unexpected guest.
“’Yeah, but I couldn’t find a sitter and I didn’t want to miss your birthday,’” the poster said, recounting Laura’s response.

That’s when the birthday woman ultimately stuck to her guns.
“I told her I understood, but I didn’t think it was fair to the rest of the guests who also made arrangements for childcare, expecting an adult environment,” she said. “The whole point was the principle of the thing — I had set a boundary, and she just ignored it.”

Laura was ultimately kicked out.
After the party, the birthday woman chatted about the situation with her friends.
“A couple of our friends think I overreacted and should have just let her stay. Others agree that it was unfair of her to put me in that position,” she wrote.
Reddit users generally supported the woman’s actions.

“You set a clear cut, defined, and reasonable boundary. And she decided to test it, and when you very politely stood by your boundary, she made herself the victim and tried to invalidate your boundary,” one user wrote.
The woman told Laura that they could meet another time to celebrate separately; however, Laura left in anger and later sent her birthday friend a text accusing her of humiliating her and making her feel like a bad mom.
