Wayne Rooney has suggested that almost the entire Manchester United squad are not fit to represent the club – apart from two players.

United have suffered a significant decline on the pitch in recent years, having not won the Premier League since 2013 – when Sir Alex Ferguson left Old Trafford. It has been another underwhelming season as they sit 14th in the league and are on course for their worst-ever Premier League season.

Under Ruben Amorim, United have won just five league games since the Portuguese boss’ arrival in November. Rooney believes the whole squad needs an overhaul.

Speaking on Stick to Football, Rooney was asked whether there is a way back for this United team. He didn’t hold back and said: “No, I don’t think so. They look lost. They look scared.

“Bruno [Fernandes] is the one who keeps producing, he annoys you at times but keeps producing. They need massive changes to the squad, I think 10-15 players need to leave the club. Obviously, they can’t do that, but there is a mentality there where no one is taking responsibility [in the squad].”

He then went on to name just two players he would keep from the current squad. “I’d keep Bruno and [Kobbie] Mainoo,” Rooney added. “There is a culture at the club where it’s too easy to lose games and the players come out and say, ‘Onto the next one,’ and all that rubbish.

“Just show some character and fight on the pitch. It’s bad watching, it hurts. Being from Liverpool but spending so many years at United, I want the team to do well, I’ve got my kids in the academy, and it hurts watching them.”

United will look to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Europa League this evening, when they take on Real Sociedad at Old Trafford. The tie is open after Amorim’s side drew 1-1 in the first leg in San Sebastian.
