Walgreens store in Milwaukee abruptly closes but pharmacy drive-thru still open for now

The Walgreens on South Layton Boulevard and National Avenue abruptly closed its doors early Friday as the retail and pharmacy giant shutters more stores across the U.S.

Milwaukee Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa said in a statement the near south side store, located at 2625 W. National Ave., is closed.

“I had previously been informed that this location was to be closed in mid-November, but that after several thefts in recent weeks the decision was made to close early,” she said.

The Walgreens website and voicemail messaging system says the store is “temporarily” closed but the pharmacy drive-thru is still open. The closest Walgreens with a pharmacy is at 1433 W. Burnham St., less than 2 miles away.

On Tuesday, Walgreens announced plans to close about 1,200 stores by 2027 and 500 by the end of next year.
