British architect converted what was once a Soviet cinema into what is now the Tselinny Center of Contemporary Culture. It is located in Kazakhstan and will be open in the city of Altamy later this year in April. The structure will be a multifunctional space for various purposes. It can host art exhibitions, performances, film screenings, and more — all of which support Kazakh and Central Asian creatives.
Khan explained that Broadway was comprised of parks and landmarks which are “definitive of the city’s golden era as the capital of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. My goal isn’t to simply renovate Soviet remnants but to uncover a Tselinny that never was, enabling a future defined by the next generation of artists and audiences. Inspired by the ideas of the institution and its visionary programme, this space, both archaic and futuristic – cloud-like in its fluidity – offers a unique opportunity for artists to plant the seeds of transformative creative exploration.”
