Following the debate on the Constitution in the Lok Sabha last week, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to initiate the same in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, sources said.
As per the list of business of the Upper House, there will be a “discussion on the glorious journey of the 75 years of the Constitution of India”. The discussion will begin after the Question Hour.
Taking part in the Constitution debate in the Lok Sabha on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the Constitutional amendments brought by his government weren’t done to tighten grip on power, in contrast with the Congress. He said Nehru-Gandhi family had “made a habit” of amending India’s Constitution as it suited their interests, starting with the country’s first PM Jawaharlal Nehru.
This comment, along with Modi’s remarks on the Emergency imposed by former PM Indira Gandhi, caused uproar in the Opposition benches. Modi also said that the Constitution had brought India “so far”, proving naysayers wrong. He added that the Constitution was instrumental in uplifting women, and every initiative of his government has women at the centre.
AAP to hold Mahila Adalat, Akhilesh may attend
Twelve years after the Aam Aadmi Party found its roots in the sporadic and angst-driven protests triggered nationwide by the December 16 gangrape, sources in Delhi’s ruling party said it would commemorate the incident at a special tribute on Monday.
AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister Atishi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav are likely to be in attendance at Thyagaraj Stadium to exhibit a joint INDIA front on the issue of women’s safety in the country, sources said.
Aimed at paying tribute to the 23-year-old victim, the event comes in the wake of the AAP government’s recently announced Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana and its political assault on the BJP in the run-up to the Delhi Assembly elections.
Dubbed Mahila Adalat, the event will be conducted in a manner similar to court proceedings, featuring a discussion on crimes against women in Delhi.
Delhi court may pronounce in 1984 riots case
A Delhi court is expected to deliver its verdict on Monday in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots murder case involving former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar.
The case pertains to the alleged killings of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh in the Saraswati Vihar area during the riots that followed the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
According to the prosecution, on November 1, 1984, a large mob, armed with weapons, looted and set fire to houses of Sikhs in the Saraswati Vihar area, including the house of Jaswant Singh. The attack led to the deaths of Jaswant Singh and his son, while their property was destroyed. The mob’s actions were described as part of widespread violence targeting Sikhs in retaliation for Indira Gandhi’s assassination.
Maharashtra Assembly’s Winter Session to begin in Nagpur
A day after the NDA expanded its Cabinet and 39 ministers took oath, the Winter Session of the Maharashtra legislature will commence in Nagpur on Monday.
An announcement in this regard was made by Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar last week, the last day of the three-day special session of the lower house of the state legislature.
The session is expected to conclude on December 21 but an official announcement will be made after the Business Advisory Committee meeting on December 18, said a Vidhan Bhavan official.
Newly-elected members took oath as MLAs during the special session of the assembly held in Mumbai which also saw the election of the speaker and the Mahayuti alliance government led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis winning a trust vote.
Mukti Jodhas to attend Vijay Diwas in Kolkata
A small delegation of Mukti Jodhas from Bangladesh will take part in the Vijay Diwas celebrations on Monday, which will be attended by West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, a defence official said.
A Bangladesh delegation comprising Mukti Jodhas, who were part of the guerrilla resistance force in East Pakistan opposing the Pakistan rule there, and serving officers of the Bangladesh Armed Forces attend the Vijay Diwas celebrations held by the Indian Army’s Eastern Command in Kolkata every year.
