Pick of the day: The White Lotus

9pm, Sky Atlantic

It might seem odd that anyone would book into a White Lotus hotel given what has happened at the fictional chain’s Hawaiian and Sicilian resorts. But still they come, so prepare for more psychosexual shenanigans, this time in Thailand, as Mike White’s black comedy returns for a (delayed by the US writers’ strike) third season. The cast includes Walton Goggins and Aimee Lou Wood as a man and his much younger girlfriend, Jason Isaacs and Parker Posey as the parents of three grown-up children, and Carrie Coon, Leslie Bibb and Michelle Monaghan as lifelong friends enjoying a “girls’ trip”. Guilty secrets abound and the whole thing begins, as it always does, with violence.

Batch From Scratch: Cooking for Less

8pm, Channel 4

Joe Swash does a culinary version of his wife Stacey Solomon’s Sort Your Life Out – here going into homes and reorganising a family’s chaotic (and expensive) eating routines. Assisted by Suzanne Mulholland, better known as the online “Batch Lady”, the idea is to help the family pre-prepare freezable, portion-controlled meals to see them through the week. They begin in Hull with the Powell family.

Virdee

9pm, BBC One

While there’s nothing particularly new about the crime plotting in this Bradford-based police drama, the setting is fresh and the cultural angles interesting. And this week, things take a turn for the macabre as a corpse is discovered with her eyes sewn shut and something surprising hidden beneath her lids. Meanwhile, Harry’s father is in intensive care following his heart attack – being unknowingly nursed by the Muslim daughter-in-law he has rejected.

Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone

9pm, BBC Two

In some respects, this powerful documentary has been overtaken by more recent events, if we take that to mean last month’s ceasefire and Donald Trump’s ambition to turn Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East”. Just how distant Trump’s real-estate dreams are to reality is, however, starkly illustrated by this look at the experiences of four young people trying to survive the Israel-Hamas war as they hoped for a ceasefire. The documentary sheds light on the reality of Gaza’s humanitarian “safe zone”, where life was punctuated by airstrikes and efforts to keep people alive in its only functioning permanent hospital.

Go Back to Where You Came From

9pm, Channel 4

The much-derided “experiment” continues with the Britons divided again into two camps. Some of them meet a people smuggler, then face the terror of a sea crossing as they depart from Lebanon for Italy. In Milan, they learn why refugees leave supposedly safe countries. Meanwhile, the other Britons arrive on the Italian island of Lampedusa, meeting refugees heading into Europe. Nathan’s views are challenged as emotions run high.

Two Men On a Bike

9pm, More4

Past members of The Mary Whitehouse Experience comedy ensemble, David Baddiel and Hugh Dennis, reunite to pedal through France – the latter on an e-bike. Gearing up for their longest holiday together, they begin in a seaside resort on the Atlantic coast and head towards Bordeaux. Between bants, they discover the city’s Renaissance architecture, take in the waterfront and sample seafood on sale in its 250-year-old market.
