Indie-pop band The 1975, fronted by Matty Healy, headlined Glastonbury Festival 2025 on Friday (June 27)
The 1975 frontman Matty Healy spoke about the importance of “friendship” during the band’s headline performance on Friday at Glastonbury 2025.
Cheshire-formed indie band The 1975 took the final slot during Glastonbury’s first full day of music on Friday night (June 27), performing at the UK festival for the first time since 2016.
Appearing on the Pyramid Stage shortly after 10:15pm once the sun had gone down on the UK festival, band-mates Adam, Matty, George and Ross gave an energetic and entertaining 90-minute performance.
During their headline slot, Matty Healy took an opportunity to share a message about “friendship”, while acknowledging that people often look to artists to use their platform to speak about politics.
Speaking candidly to the crowd, Matty said: “Use your platform, that’s what they say right? People who are watching this, may be disappointed at the lack of politics in this show, or future shows.
“I want you to know it’s a conscious decision. We don’t want our legacy to be one of politics. We want it to be one of love and friendship.”
The 36-year-old singer continued: “And im not trying to be too earnest but you go out into the world and there’s loads of politics everywhere. And I think we don’t need more politics, we need more love and friendship.
“And I know that’s really basic, but if you are a young person and are inspired by this band, then don’t aspire to play a stage or be a certain stage, aspire for this level of friendship in everything that you do.”
He finished the short speech by saying: “And you’ll never fail. And I love you.”
The award-winning band, hailing from Wilmslow in Cheshire, have been working hard on a new album in recent months but will be making a rare appearance at the festival as part of their limited live dates this year.
In March, the pop outfit rounded off their Still… At Their Very Best tour, following the success of their fifth studio album Being Funny In A Foreign Language.
Their recent live shows have featured the band playing on an elaborate set laid out to look like a house, complete with doors, a staircase, sofas and various other items that are incorporated into the performance.
Elsewhere on Friday, there were performances from popstar Gracie Abrams, hip-hop legend Busta Rhymes, PinkPantheress, Alanis Morissette, CMAT and more big names from across the music industry.
More than 200,000 music lovers have gathered at Worthy Farm, Somerset, this week to celebrate more than 3,000 artists performing over the five days.
Still to perform throughout the rest of the week at Glastonbury is RAYE, John Fogerty, Rod Stewart, Olivia Rodrigo, Jorja Smith, Snow Patrol, Kaiser Chiefs among many more big names.
