Massive tsunami waves hit the coastlines of Japan and Russia on Wednesday after an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 on the Richter scale jolted off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. The tremors were located around 250 km from Hokkaido. According to a report by BNO News, four giant whales were washed ashore on the coastline of Japan. The US Geological Survey stated it was the sixth-largest quake.
Additionally, the Klyuchevskoy volcano, which is located in the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia, began erupting lava into the Pacific following the powerful quake. The Klyuchevskoy volcano is the tallest active volcano in Eurasia.
The Russian Academy of Sciences’ United Geophysical Service stated in its statement that “A descent of burning hot lava is observed on the western slope. Powerful glow above the volcano, explosions” read an official statement from the Russian Academy of Sciences’ United Geophysical Service on Telegram.
The Klyuchevskoy volcano is situated approx 450 km north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the regional capital. Its most recent eruption occurred in 2023.
Local authorities have reported the volcanic eruptions of the volcano on several occasions.
In recent years, local authorities have reported eruptions on several occasions. Observers have noted explosions as well as streams of lava on its western slopes, the Kamchatka branch of the Russian agency said. On social media, multiple videos of the eruption have gone viral
Several videos of the eruption of the lava have gone viral on the internet like a wild fire. The national broadcaster NHK of Japan had earlier warned that massive tsunami waves could struck northern as well as eastern coastal regions.
According to the NASA Earth Observatory, Kamchatka has nearly 300 volcanoes, with 29 classified as active volcano. Known as the “land of fire and ice,” the place is recognised as one of the most seismically active volcanic areas in the world.
