Many sources discussing alignment layers discuss photoalignment, and many sources discussing photoalignment discussing rubbing techniques. They are often compared to each other — the article discussing photoalignment discusses rubbing, and a discussion of photoalignment has to be included in the general “alignment layers” article anyway. Therefore I merged photoalignment into the general article, which also helps in telling the history of alignment layers, a subject well-covered in the sources.
