Suspects identified in graffiti attack on ‘beloved’ Ottawa mural

Three people have been charged in connection with the defacement early in the year of a “beloved community mural” on an Ottawa Community Housing in Wurtemburg Street in Lowertown.

In a release, police said the graffiti attack occurred on the evening of Jan. 16. The damage was noticed the next day and reported to police.

Police said two of the suspects have been arrested and charged, while  investigators are asking for assistance to locate the third individual.

Liam McGarry, 29, of Ottawa, is wanted for mischief exceeding $5,000.

The striking nine-storey mural Transformation: The Welcoming Ottawa Mural on the building’s south wall facing 215 Wurtemburg St. was not damaged.

The butterfly mural addresses themes of change and diversity, organizers said.

The mural is on the south wall of the building, facing Rideau Street. It helps to beautify the building and highlight the diversity of the community.
