Sugar Prices Surge to Rs. 190 per Kg

Despite an agreement between the government and sugar mill owners, retail prices of sugar have surged in Lahore, reaching Rs. 190 per kilogram, well above the official rate of Rs. 165 per kg.

Shopkeepers report that the wholesale price of a 50kg sugar sack has climbed to Rs. 9,100. Additionally, several retailers claim that the sacks are underweight by 100 to 200 grams.

Due to the high procurement cost and price cap, many shopkeepers have stopped stocking sugar, saying they are unable to sell it at a loss.

Consumers confirm that sugar is widely being sold at Rs. 190 per kg in open markets and are urging the government to enhance its price monitoring and enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance.
