Strictly Come Dancing star Anton Du Beke has opened up about becoming a father to twins at the age of 50 and his hilarious reaction when he found out his wife was pregnant
Strictly Come Dancing star Anton Du Beke has confessed he was left utterly stunned upon discovering his wife Hannah was expecting.
The ballroom expert became a father at 50 when twins George and Henrietta arrived. Anton and Hannah had turned to IVF treatment following her battle with endometriosis.
Yet with the expensive treatment offering no guarantees, the couple had little notion of the extraordinary fortune awaiting them.
Confessing he was “stunned” upon learning they were expecting twins, Anton disclosed his immediate reaction to his wife was: “F*** me babe”.
Reflecting on that momentous day, he explained: “We’re in the place. In the room. And the fella’s there … the doctor… and he’s got the … the camera thing … and he goes: ‘Oh, there’s one heartbeat’ and I go: ‘Wow’. And he’s fiddling around. And then he goes: ‘Oh, there’s another heartbeat. And I was stunned, and I went: ‘F**k me, babe’. Sort of like that, stunned. And I couldn’t speak. I went: ‘Well done you’.”
Witnessing her husband’s bewildered expression, Hannah enquired whether Anton fancied a trip to the golf club, prompting the sequined celebrity to respond: “Maybe I’ll have a wander around and I’ll hit a few shots”, reports the Mirror.
During his chat with Giovanni Fletcher on her Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast, he added: “And then we end up with this perfect, perfect boy and girl who are just… I know everybody says it about their own children, but they are just magical.”
Explaining he would have 100 children if IVF weren’t so expensive, he added: “I could, I’d have 100. I do it repeatedly. I, I love it so much. Every single bit about being… I love it, it’s stupendous. It’s, I, I would do it over and over and over again if I had enough money.”
Back in 2023, Anton, who met Hannah at a golf club in 2011 and married her in 2017, opened up about their fertility journey, revealing her struggle with endometriosis.
During an appearance on the Parenting Hell podcast, he described his wife as “practically perfect” and lovingly said she was “everything I thought she would be”.
He said: “I thought she’d be an excellent mum, always knew she’d be a great mum but she couldn’t have children. I thought, ‘Isn’t it funny how nature works in mysterious ways?'”.
Anton shared the “sad irony” that his partner, who “would be an incredible mum”, had faced fertility challenges.
Fortunately, their journey had a happy ending thanks to successful IVF treatment.
Speaking to the Mirror in 2022, the Strictly star revealed that becoming a father at 50 was the “best thing” that had ever happened to him, saying: “We had children when I was 50 and it has been the best thing that ever happened in my life. We decided to have children and we went down the IVF route. We did it and had the greatest fortune as we became pregnant. We thank our lucky stars. It is the most incredible thing in the world and has been brilliant.”
