Pillows might not be the first item you think to wash when tackling your bedding, but neglecting them can lead to lots of unhygienic issues. Given that our heads rest on our pillows every night, they can quickly gather sweat, oils, dead skin cells, and in the springtime, become a haven for pollen.

Leaving your pillows unwashed can lead to skin irritation from bacteria, unpleasant odours, the attraction of dust mites, and potentially allergies. David Smith, a cleaning expert from Down and Feather Company, has revealed a cleaning hack to get your stained pillows looking brand new again – without using a washing machine or bleach.

“There are a few tried and true methods that can help reduce or eliminate yellow stains from your pillows and pillowcases, and plenty of them can be accomplished with everyday household staples,” he says.

He suggests a straightforward homemade solution to purge those unsightly pillow stains – lemon juice and baking soda. Not only does the mix of these two natural ingredients cleanse the fabric, it can eradicate the yellow blemishes left behind by bacteria, reports the Express.

David explained: “Create a paste using lemon juice and baking soda, then gently rub it onto the yellow stains.”

He also explained the science behind it, as citric acid found in lemon juice is naturally bleaching and antimicrobial, ensuring germs on your pillows don’t stand a chance.

David explained that baking soda isn’t just effective at loosening grime and oil, its high absorption powers mean it can draw out unwanted moisture trapped within the pillow’s fabric.

Here’s a simple guide on how to make the solution for cleaning pillows:

Start by liberally sprinkling baking soda over the soiled pillow. Next, squeeze several lemons onto the baking soda.

It’s recommended to use fresh fruit rather than bottled juice, as the potency of fresh lemon juice is more effective.

After combining the lemon juice and baking soda, you may notice a slight fizzing reaction as the mixture penetrates the fabric. Don’t worry, this won’t harm your pillow.

Allow the pillow to sit undisturbed for at least half an hour. This will help to dislodge any stains and eliminate bacteria.

After the waiting period, gently rub the pillow with a soft cloth to further remove any dirt from the fabric.

Following this, proceed to wash the pillow as usual in your washing machine or alternatively, give it a brief soak in a basin filled with hot water for rinsing.

Hang the pillow up to dry. Once fully dried, you’ll be left with a thoroughly cleaned pillow that not only appears much whiter but also smells fresher and is entirely germ-free.
