Sonam Kapoor’s long, luscious hair is part good genes, part a result of dedicated focus on nutrition and a solid haircare routine. In a recent interview, the Bollywood actor spilled the beans on the A-Z of taking care of her tresses, despite dealing with the constant “abuse” it goes through due to her job.
Kapoor revealed that her favourite thing about having long hair is that it makes her feel like herself. “I know there have been different trends, but I always feel that when I have long hair, I take care of it and what I put in my body. I promise you I would be on a stricter diet if it would affect my hair. I make sure I eat eat, so that I don’t have a lot of hair fall,” she told Grazia.
Haircare rituals Sonam Kapoor swears by
Sharing that she dials down on the right preventative products that safeguard from damage and nourish her hair, when it comes to daily rituals, applying serum is one thing she never skips. “Because I have very long hair, even if I condition it, after my hair is slightly towel dried and damp, I apply a little serum on the ends because it seals all the moisture in and protects the hair,” she shared. Conditioner and serum are her go-to quick fix for dealing with frizz.
Her biggest hair mistake, she reveals, was to perm her hair for a film, where “it kinda got destroyed” and took her a really long time to repair it. “Especially when you have coloured hair, the salon you go to has to give you the right advice, and I wasn’t guided well. It literally fried my hair and I had to regrow it — which took me around 5 years,” revealed the Khoobsurat actor. Her favourite hair accessories include bows and hairbands, ever since she filmed Aisha.
Sonam’s in-shower hair wash routine
Kapoor always shampoos twice, and then applies a conditioner- starting from below the ear and leaving the roots untouched. “A trick that I actually learned – instead of conditioning my hair when it’s drenched, I wash it twice with shampoo and then get a towel inside and squeeze the water out of my hair. Then I condition it, hand comb it and then towel dry it again before applying a serum and a heat protectant to prepare for blast or blow drying,” said the Neerja actor.
Namika Kant, technical expert at Envi Salons, told indianexpress.com that perming is a chemical treatment that alters the hair structure to form waves or curls, and has the potential to wreak havoc if not done correctly.
Commenting on Sonam Kapoor’s haircare routine, she said that oils and serums deeply hydrate hair, lock in moisture, and minimise split ends. “Regular application adds shine and strengthens the strands. Heat protection sprays are a must as they create a shield between hair and styling tools, reducing the risk of damage from high temperatures,” she concurred. However, she warned against over-washing to preserve natural oils, and recommended using professional grade shampoo and conditioner to deal with dryness.
