The province’s police watchdog agency has invoked its mandate after a man was seriously injured in an Ontario Provincial Police operation in the Stone Mills Township area Friday night.

In a release on X, formerly Twitter, the OPP said police were called for a disturbance at a residence on Lennox and Addington County Road 4. The residence is in the Camden East area of Stone Mills.

In its preliminary report, the SIU said the incident began at about 5 p.m. as OPP officers attempted to speak to a 41-year-old man who was inside the residence.

“At some point, the man exited the residence with an edged weapon,” the SIU report said.

“An interaction ensued and two officers deployed Anti-Riot Weapon ENfields,” referring to anti-riot weapons that fire non-lethal rounds.

“Another officer discharged a firearm and the man was struck,” the SIU said.

The man was transported to hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators were assigned to the case, the SIU said.

The SIU urged anyone with information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php
