Sigourney Weaver Says “You Never Know” in Regards to Neill Blomkamp’s Scrapped ‘Aliens’ Sequel

Before Ridley Scott took his Alien franchise back, Neill Blomkamp had been developing a direct sequel to James Cameron‘s 1986 Aliens. 20th Century Fox had been behind it, especially because it would bring both Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn back into the franchise; alas, it just wasn’t meant to be, and Blomkamp has since moved on.

But in a new chat with THR, Weaver herself seems to suggest that Blomkamp’s Alien film *could* still happen. The good news? James Cameron is strongly in the project’s corner.

We almost started to do [Blomkamp’s Alien] when I was working with James Cameron. But by the time we were put off by Fox, Neill had gotten so many jobs that we’d have to wait probably,” Weaver explained to the site. “I’m busy doing Avatar 4 and 5. I love working with Neill and I think he’d do a terrific job, and James Cameron really thinks it’s a great idea, so you never know. Right now, I think Neill’s got like three projects going at once.”

In the wake of Halloween‘s box office success, it would seem to be fantastic idea right now to bring back Weaver for one more Alien film, returning to the original continuity that fans love and rebooting the franchise proper. Of course, one big issue here could be Disney’s acquisition of Fox, with that deal expected to close early next year. Would that spell the end of Alien?

Even if it has to be PG-13, we are *dying* to see what Blomkamp would do with his “Alien 5.” So here’s hoping the powers that be realize the potential there and give it the green light.

Never. Say. Never.
