Name: Anna Harrington
Age: 35
From: Boston
On July 11, 2005 I lost my mother, Patrice Harrington, to a rare form of brain cancer. I am running the Boston Marathon for Dana-Farber in her memory and to continue the fight against one of the deadliest and least-funded types of cancer.
My mom was a constant source of love, strength, and guidance for me growing up. When she was diagnosed with brain cancer, my world changed forever. Watching her battle with such courage and dignity was both inspiring and heartbreaking. Despite her illness, she never lost her spirit. I will never forget coming home from school and hearing her listening to Eminem to stay strong, or at the end of her illness when her doctors asked if she wanted to give up treatment because the prognosis was poor, but she continued to fight until the very end. Her strength is something I carry with me every day, and I know will help me get across the finish line on April 21.
During her illness, the team at Dana-Farber gave her amazing care. I am honored to get a chance to raise awareness and funds for brain cancer research, and for Dana-Farber, so that future families don’t have to endure what we did. It’s crucial that we come together to support research that could lead to better treatments, earlier detection, and ultimately a cure.
I’m running not only for my mom, but for everyone whose life has been touched by cancer. Together, we’re headed toward the ultimate finish line: a world without cancer.
