In the latest season of Fabulous Lives vs Bollywood Wives, Seema Sajdeh revealed her DIY nighttime skincare ritual — slugging — during a candid conversation with Orhan Awatramani (aka Orry).
While the name might sound unappealing, slugging has become popular among skincare enthusiasts for its hydration and moisturising benefits. But is it the right choice for everyone? We asked an expert.
What is slugging?
Slugging involves applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly or an occlusive agent to your skin as the final step of your nighttime skincare routine. This process locks in moisture, helps repair the skin barrier, and prevents transepidermal water loss (TEWL) while you sleep, explained Dr Shareefa Chause, a dermatologist at Dr Shareefa Skin Care Clinic in Mumbai.
Popularised in Korean skincare routines, slugging has gained traction globally for its simplicity and effectiveness, especially for those with dry or sensitive skin.
Dr Chause said that slugging is particularly beneficial for people with dry skin. It creates a protective barrier over the skin, ensuring intense hydration and locking in all the goodness of the serums and creams applied beforehand.

Who should avoid slugging?
While slugging benefits those with parched skin, Dr Chause said it may not be suitable for everyone.
- Acne-Prone and Oily Skin Types: According to her, petroleum jelly can clog pores, leading to breakouts. Individuals with oily or acne-prone skin should approach this trend cautiously or avoid it altogether.
- Sensitive Skin: If your skin is prone to irritation, patch testing is crucial before slugging, as the occlusive layer might trap irritants.
The answer depends on your skin type and concerns. While Sajdeh swears by slugging as her secret to glowing skin, the approach isn’t universal. For dry and dehydrated skin types, it can be a game-changer. However, if your skin is oily, acne-prone, or sensitive, you may want to consult a dermatologist before trying it.
How to do slugging the right way
For those intrigued by slugging, here are some dermatologist-approved tips to maximise its benefits:
- Start with Clean Skin: Make sure your face is thoroughly cleansed to avoid trapping dirt or makeup under the petroleum jelly.
- Layer Your Products: Apply your usual skincare products, such as serums and moisturisers, before the petroleum jelly.
- Use the Right Quantity:
- Dry Skin: A slightly generous layer works best to deeply moisturize.
- Oily Skin: If you insist on trying slugging, use a very thin layer to minimise the risk of clogged pores.
- Stick to Nighttime: Slugging is best done as part of your nighttime skincare routine since it can leave your face looking shiny.
