Scott McTominay scored twice for Napoli as they continued their bid to win the Serie A title on Sunday. The former Manchester United midfielder, who left Old Trafford in a £25.7million move last summer, has been a revelation during his time in Naples and helped his team to a 2-0 win over Torino.

During his final couple of years at United, McTominay became a huge goal threat and that has only increased since joining Napoli. The Scotsman had scored 10 goals in 31 appearances for Antonio Conte’s side before their game against Torino and he showed once again why he is such a problem inside the box.

McTominay scored his first against Torino in the seventh minute. Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa whipped in an enticing ball into the box for the ex-United man to prod home from close-range.

He added his second to complete his brace in the 41st minute. McTominay got on the end of Matteo Politano’s cross to fire into the bottom corner and spark jubilant celebrations inside the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

While his second-half performance wasn’t as free-flowing and flashy, McTominay did the damage in the first period to help Napoli to a precious win in their bid to win the 2024/25 Scudetto.

Conte’s Napoli are now three points clear at the top of the Serie A table with four matches to go. They require 10 more points to get the job done, although Inter Milan’s recent drop off could help them win it with less.

If Napoli win the Serie A it would be McTominay’s first career league title, having came second on two occasions with United.

While McTominay is having a terrific season at Napoli, United are languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League and Ruben Amorim could benefit from having someone like the Scot in his team right now.

Capable of making those late runs into the box, McTominay, who now has 12 goals to his name, might have been perfect as a No.10 in Ruben Amorim’s system alongside a more dynamic attacker.

And Gary Lineker is certainly of the belief he would thrive in a back five system. “McTominay is exactly the player, I would say, that would work in an Amorim system. He’s what they need,” he said on Rest Is Football Podcast.

“And I know they were forced to sell him because of this PSR and he’s a local lad, which we all think is a nonsensical and a ridiculous feature of this particular rule.”
