Samsung brings Gemini AI to Galaxy A56, A36 & A26 5G via side button with a May update, enabling smarter voice commands and cross-app tasks.

Samsung Electronics has announced that an upcoming software update will allow certain Galaxy A series smartphones to activate an AI assistant using the side button. This feature, previously available on flagship Galaxy S series models, will soon be extended to more devices, aligning with the company’s goal to expand AI-based functionality across its lineup.
With the update, users of the Galaxy A56 5G, Galaxy A36 5G, and Galaxy A26 5G will be able to launch Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, by pressing and holding the side button. This enhancement builds on Samsung’s recent addition of AI features under the “Awesome Intelligence” suite for the Galaxy A series.
The integration of Gemini offers users an alternative method to manage daily tasks through voice commands. By enabling access through the side button, users can perform a variety of actions more efficiently, such as checking schedules, finding restaurants, or receiving suggestions for gifts. The assistant also allows cross-app interactions — for instance, identifying a location on Google Maps and sending it via Samsung Messages — with support for Samsung apps, Google apps, and a few third-party services.
Samsung says this new method of accessing Gemini is designed to make AI tools easier to use and more readily available during daily routines. Voice interaction simplifies common tasks like planning meals or coordinating meetups. A typical command might be: “Find French, pet-friendly restaurants with terrace seating nearby,” prompting a list of suggestions without requiring manual input.
Jay Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of the Customer Experience Office in Samsung’s Mobile eXperience division, emphasized that this update is part of a broader collaboration between Samsung and Google. The goal is to provide more seamless AI functionality to a wider range of smartphone users.
The update is expected to begin rolling out globally in early May for selected Galaxy A series devices. It will gradually expand availability depending on region and carrier compatibility.
