Authorities in Multan have arrested two key suspects linked to a large-scale online fraud operation worth an estimated Rs. 20 billion. The suspects, including ringleader Samar Abbas, were taken into custody during a targeted operation by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA).
The operation, led by NCCIA officials, also arrested Abbas’s unnamed associate. Raids are currently underway to apprehend another key suspect, identified as Abdul Hai. Officials said the accused had been evading arrest for over a year and is originally from the Layyah district.
According to the NCCIA Additional Director, the suspects created fake commercial investment schemes, misleading the public with false promises of high returns. The victims, primarily citizens from South Punjab, were defrauded out of billions of rupees.
Dozens of inquiries have been initiated in connection with the scam. Authorities said legal proceedings are now underway and further arrests are expected as the investigation expands.
Officials noted that cyber fraud remains a growing concern in Pakistan, mirroring trends observed globally. The scammers continue to evolve their tactics, which means the public also needs to be more vigilant of these ill schemes.
In related news, an online cybercrime gang was just arrested near Multan, with over six suspects involved and six smartphones recovered with evidence of fraudulent activities. These scammers were using fake WhatsApp accounts and Facebook IDs to lure citizens into giving up their money via JazzCash accounts.
