A roadside fast-food cart operator died by suicide on Facebook Live in Haryana’s Jind district in the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.
The deceased has been identified as Sanjeev Thakur, 26, a migrant from Bihar.
People saw his live post and a few of his neighbours reached his home, and took him to the civil hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
Thakur’s wife Kiran Devi told the police that she and her husband hail from the Katihar district in Bihar. The couple had taken a loan of Rs 2.5 lakh from a few people in their village but could not repay it. To avoid money lenders, they migrated to Jind a few months ago. Thakur started selling fast food on a cart in the Vishwakarma colony of Jind but could not repay his loan.
In his last FB post, Thakur mentioned he was having a 102-degree fever and believed that he wouldn’t survive. He added that people should forgive him for his mistakes and that he was ending his life.
Inspector Manish Kumar, City Police Station, Jind told The Indian Express that the deceased was mentally disturbed for the last few days due to his inability to repay the debt that he and his wife had taken. “His wife has stated that she does not suspect any foul play. We have initiated the inquest proceedings and shall hand over the deceased’s body to his family members after the post-mortem examination,” he added.
