Relive Alec Baldwin’s MANY scandals as he prepares for a comeback… from public brawls to a homophobic slur

When Alec Baldwin accidentally shot and killed a cinematographer on set of his movie Rust, the horrific incident cast a dark shadow over the actor, leaving many to wonder if it would be the end of his career or if he’d be able to make a comeback.

The shooting and the events that followed – which included an intense police investigation, an involuntary manslaughter charge, and a highly-publicized trial that ultimately ended in the case being dismissed – was the latest in a long list of scandals to plague the 30 Rock star.

Alec’s decades-long career has been continuously rocked by public brawls and outbursts, accusations of a homophobic slur, alcohol and drug use, and multiple run-ins with the law.

At first, the Rust shooting seemed like it might have been the final blow for the former Hollywood leading man, who, when asked in the aftermath if his career was ‘over,’ replied, ‘It could be.’

But months after the charges against him were dropped, it seems like the star, now 66, has no intention of retiring from showbusiness, but rather, he is now preparing to take on what may arguably be his most public move yet: a reality show.

The actor announced last June that he would be starring in a new TLC series in 2025 that would showcase his day-to-day life with his wife, Hilaria Baldwin, and their seven children.

It’s a surprising turn of events for someone who has shared his disdain for cameras and ‘public life’ on numerous occasions.

Alec was first skyrocketed into the spotlight in 1988 after he starred in Tim Burton’s beloved film Beetlejuice, and he quickly cemented himself as a major star, landing roles in top films throughout the 1990s and earning a slew of awards for his work.

As Alec Baldwin (seen in 2019) prepares for a career comeback, take a look back at all the controversies he has faced over the years

But soon after he became a Hollywood icon, Alec earned a reputation for being a hot head.

Tales of him ‘throwing chairs’ on set and ‘trashing his dressing room’ began to circulate. He was caught on camera lashing out at photographers many times, and was even arrested more than once over physical altercations.

His alleged temper put him in hot water time and time again, but even so, Alec continuously overcame the bad press to act in big films and shows.

But when tragedy struck his film Rust in 2021, it seemed like it would be the end of Alec’s life in the spotlight once and for all.

Flash forward three years later and he’s now gearing up for his comeback, with a reality series in the works and a recent stint on Saturday Night Live.

As we wait and see if Alec will be able to shake his latest scandal and reemerge as a star like he’s done many times before, take a look back at all the controversies he has faced over the years.

From his past drug use and long list of legal problems to his public outbursts and messy divorce, here’s a look back at the many scandals Alec has faced throughout his decades-long career.

Alec has been open about how he struggled with drug and alcohol use during the early years of his career.

Back in 2009, he revealed that he turned to drugs in the early ’80s to ‘calm down and take his mind off everything.’

During an appearance on Good Morning America in 2017, the star said he went through a period of being a ‘daily drug abuser’ and even overdosed once in his 20s.

‘Those two years that I lived in that white hot period as a daily drug abuser, as a daily drinker, to my misery, boy that was a tough time,’ he said.

‘There was really really, a lot of pain in there… a lot of pain.’

He ultimately got sober just as he was about to turn 27, on February 23, 1985. Three years later, he landed his breakthrough role in Beetlejuice.

While Alec was in the midst of becoming a Hollywood leading man, he faced his first major controversy in 1991 when he became embroiled in a very public feud with Disney executives over his role in Disney’s The Marrying Man.

Alec publicly bashed the company, and branded its leaders as ‘totally evil greedy pigs’ during an interview with Entertainment Weekly right after the film premiered in 1991.

He also called Disney chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg ‘the eighth dwarf – greedy’ and the film’s writer Neil Simon ‘about as deep as a bottle cap.’

His comments came after Premiere magazine reported that crew members said that making the film was ‘production from hell’ and claimed that Alec ‘threw chairs and swore at crew members.’

When asked about Premiere’s claims by Entertainment Weekly, Alec said that ‘his temper skyrocketed because he simply wanted to make a good movie and was thwarted by a studio that cares about money more than art,’ the publication wrote.

And while it was initially said the scheduling problems were to blame, EW later reported that Alec was ‘making too many waves in the press and too few at the box office’ contributed to Paramount’s decision to recast him.

In 1992, a newspaper reported that Alec ‘threw a backstage temper tantrum’ and trashed his dressing room while he was starring in the Broadway show A Streetcar Named Desire alongside Jessica Lange.

The publication claimed that Alec had requested a pair of tickets be left at the box office for his pal Stephen Collins.

But when Stephen failed to pick them up by the start of the show, the venue decided to sell the tickets to the public instead.

‘Collins went backstage to say hello, and Baldwin asked him if he had good seats,’ a source told them.

‘When he told Baldwin that the tickets had been sold, Baldwin flipped out. He went on a tirade.

‘Some guys came in later to fix things up. One of them asked, “What the heck happened here?” Someone told him, “It’s called Alec Baldwin.”‘

In 1995, Alec became entangled in scandal once again when he was placed on citizens arrest over an altercation with a photographer.

The Los Angeles Times reported at the time that he had punched a videographer named Alan Zanger, who was waiting outside his and wife Kim Basinger’s home while they were arriving home from the hospital with their newborn daughter, Ireland.

‘Baldwin approached him and basically said… “I don’t mind if you film me, but I don’t want you filming the baby,”‘ LAPD Lt. Ray Lombardo told the publication.

His request reportedly led to an argument between the men, which resulted in Alec allegedly hitting Alan in the nose.

‘Anyone with a shred of human decency would understand that there are times in your life when you want your privacy respected, whether you are a public figure or not,’ Alec said in a statement at the time.

‘I do believe that bringing your wife and three-day-old baby home from the hospital is one of those occasions.

‘That Mr. Zanger felt it was appropriate to videotape my home and my family for his own profit is unacceptable to me.

‘I asked him repeatedly to stop filming us and he refused each request. I dispute his contention that I broke his nose or caused any other facial damage.’

He was placed under citizens arrest, and while he was acquitted of the battery charges, Alec later lost a civil case against Alan, which resulted in him having to pay the photographer $4,500 in damages.

Alec’s personal life faced a huge blow in 2000 when it was revealed that he and his wife, Kim, were getting a divorce after seven years together.

The two stars had fallen in love while they were filming The Marrying Man together, and tied the knot in 1993.

Their split was followed by a bitter years-long custody battle over their daughter, Ireland, who was born in 1995.

Kim later described Alec as ‘a challenge’ while reflecting on their relationship during an appearance on Red Table Talk in 2022.

‘Parenting can be difficult, and Ireland having the anxiety issues that she’s had, was that a difficult process with Alec, or were you guys able to kind of see eye to eye on how to handle it?’ host Jada Pinkett Smith asked Kim at the time.

‘Eye to eye?’ a bemused Kim asked. ‘No. No, that was not – Alec’s a funny one.

‘We’re all fine and we all get along [now], whatever. But he’s been – but he’s a challenge.

‘I mean, come on. We’ve had our challenges. And I don’t think Alec was emotionally or mentally available for that kind of talk. Alec operates in a very different way in his life.’

Following his tumultuous and highly publicized split, Alec’s career took a negative turn as he shifted toward smaller, supporting roles.

He starred in Pearl Harbor, The Devil and Daniel Webster, The Cooler, The Aviator, The Departed, and The Good Shepherd in the early 2000s.

His rumored temper struck again in 2006, as it was reported that his costar Jan Maxwell in the off-Broadway play Entertaining Mr. Sloane had ‘abruptly departed’ the show because of an alleged outburst from Alec.

She told the New York Post at the time, ‘When something clicks in him, I don’t want to be around.’

She claimed that she decided to leave the production after an incident which saw Alec ‘throwing things because the air conditioning was not on high enough for his tastes,’ Broadway.com reported.

The publication added, ‘Alec said that he had asked the theater personnel repeatedly to put the air conditioner on higher because he was sweating too much on stage and one day he indeed lost his temper over the matter, punching a wall.

‘But he said he apologized to Jan shortly after the incident and, once she had given notice, asked her not to leave.’

Roundabout Theatre Company said in a statement at the time, however, ‘Mr. Baldwin has been totally professional in all dealings with the company and management throughout the engagement of Entertaining Mr. Sloane and we are delighted to have him in the show.’

In 2007, Alec called his then-11-year-old daughter Ireland a ‘rude, thoughtless little pig’ in a leaked voicemail

Alec’s career was rejuvenated when he began starring in the immensely popular NBC comedy 30 Rock alongside Tina Fey in October 2006.

But months after its premiere, Alec found himself in hot water once again when a nasty voicemail that he had left for his then-11-year-old daughter, Ireland, leaked on the web.

In the now-infamous message, Alec called the youngster a ‘rude, thoughtless little pig.’

He ranted: ‘You are a rude, thoughtless little pig. You don’t have the brains or the decency as a human being.

‘I don’t give a damn that you’re 12 years old, or 11 years old, or that you’re a child, or that your mother is a thoughtless pain in the a** who doesn’t care about what you do as far as I’m concerned.

‘Once again I have made an a** of myself trying to get to a phone. You have humiliated me for the last time with this phone.’

The actor told Ireland that he drops everything when it is time for his scheduled phone calls and expected her to do the same.

He then threatened to fly to LA ‘for the day, just to straighten her out on this issue.’

‘I’m sorry, as everyone who knows me is aware, for losing my temper with my child,’ Alec wrote in a statement afterwards.

‘I have been driven to the edge by parental alienation for many years now. You have to go through this to understand. (Although I hope you never do). I am sorry for what happened.’

Ex-wife Kim’s reps responded in a statement of their own, which read, ‘It is Kim’s sincerest wish is for [Alec] to finally address his unstable and irrational behavior so he, at some point can potentially create a relationship with his daughter.’

During an appearance on The View days later, Alec addressed the controversy again.

‘Obviously calling your child a pig or anything else is improper and inappropriate and I apologize to my daughter for that,’ he said.

‘There’s nothing wrong with being frustrated or angry about the situation. It’s the way you do it, and as people often do in this world, I took it out on the wrong person.’

At the time, he also revealed that he had asked NBC to release him from his 30 Rock contract.

‘If I never acted again I couldn’t care less. I would like to devote myself to the cause of parental alienation,’ he announced.

The 30 Rock star announced in 2009 that he wanted to stop acting and called his ‘entire movie career a complete failure’

Despite his claims to leave 30 Rock, he continued acting in the show, which went on for seven seasons until 2013.

Throughout the late 2000s, he also starred in a slew of movies like Suburban Girl, crime drama Brooklyn Rules, rom-com My Best Friend’s Girl, My Sister’s Keeper, and the film It’s Complicated with Meryl Streep and Steve Martin.

But in December 2009, he announced that he wanted to stop acting and that he was going to retire when 30 Rock ended.

In a shocking interview with Men’s Journal, Alec said he ‘didn’t have any interest in acting anymore’ and described his ‘entire movie career as a complete failure.’

‘Movies are a part of my past. It’s been 30 years. I’m not young, but I have time to do something else,’ he said.

‘I consider my entire movie career a complete failure. The goal of movie-making is to star in a film where your performance drives the film, and the film is either a soaring critical or commercial success, and I never had that.

‘And now, the movies I’ve been in, I never give them a moment’s thought. Every movie I’ve ever been in, I just avoid.’

In February 2010, it was reported that Alec had been rushed to the hospital after ‘an overdose scare prompted his daughter to call 911,’ per CBS News.

It was said that Ireland, then 14, called the police after they got into an argument and he ‘threatened to take pills.’

‘This was a misunderstanding on one person’s part. Alec was quickly released from the hospital. He’s completely fine and will be at work today,’ his rep said afterwards.

Then, in 2011, he was accused of being ‘extremely rude to crew, calling them inappropriate names, and using offensive language’ after he was removed from an American Airlines flight.

At the time, Alec claimed on X, formerly Twitter, that he had been booted for refusing to turn off his phone while they ‘sat at the gate not moving.’

Alec told CNN of the incident, ‘I did what I have nearly always done and that was to pull out my phone to complete any other messaging I had to do before take off.

‘In nearly all other instances, the flight attendants seemed to be unbothered… and said nothing about such activity, by me or anyone else, until we actually were pulling away from the gate.’

American Airlines had a different take, writing on Facebook at the time, ‘The passenger was extremely rude to the crew, calling them inappropriate names and using offensive language.’

The airline also alleged to CNN that Alec got up and ‘slammed’ the bathroom door ‘so hard the cockpit crew heard it and became alarmed.’

Alec announced he was done with ‘public life’ after a series of altercations with photographers in 2013, including one in which he appeared to use a gay slur

His talk show got canceled after only five episodes in 2013

His talk show got canceled after only five episodes in 2013

But that was quickly cut short after he became embroiled in controversy again.

His show got canceled after only five episodes when Alec was caught on camera appearing to call a photographer a ‘c***sucking f*g’ as he was leaving his New York City apartment.

Afterwards, he said, ‘I did not intend to hurt or offend anyone with my choice of words, but clearly I have – and for that I am deeply sorry.

‘Words are important. I understand that, and will choose mine with great care going forward.

‘What I said and did this week, as I was trying to protect my family, was offensive and unacceptable.

‘Behavior like this undermines hard-fought rights that I vigorously support.’

But he denied using a homophobic slur, adding on X, ‘Anti-gay slurs are wrong. They not only offend, but threaten hard fought tolerance of LGBT rights.

‘I’m grateful to all of the people I meet and hear from who recognize that I would never say something to offend my friends in the gay community.’

Other photographers began speaking out against Alec afterwards.

One snapper told TMZ that Alec had called him a ‘c**n, crackhead, and drug dealer,’ while another reporter claimed that Alec had threatened to ‘choke her to death.’

Then, in August of that year, Alec got into a physical altercation with photographer Paul Adao (seen)

He responded and said the allegations were ‘some of the most outrageous things he had heard in his life.’

In August 2013, Alec got into a physical altercation with another photographer named Paul Adao.

Photos of the scene showed the actor first warning off the male photographer then manhandling him over the hood of a parked car in New York.

Police did not press charges in the case after it was revealed Paul was known to Alec and had repeatedly tried to engage with the actor and his wife despite being rebuffed.

Then, in 2014, Alec announced that he was stepping away from his ‘public life’ for good amid all the bad press in an essay written for Vulture magazine.

‘2013 was actually a great year, because my wife and I had a baby. But, yeah, everything else was pretty awful,’ he wrote.

‘And I find myself bitter, defensive, and more misanthropic than I care to admit. And I’m trying to understand what happened, how an altercation on the street, in which I was accused – wrongly – of using a gay slur, could have cascaded like this.

‘There’s been a shift in my life. And it’s caused me to step back and say, This is happening for a reason.’

He added, ‘Am I a homophobe? Look, I work in show business. I am awash in gay people, as colleagues and as friends.

‘I’m doing Rock of Ages one day, making out with Russell Brand. Soon after that, I’m advocating with Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Cynthia Nixon for marriage equality.

‘I’m officiating at a gay friend’s wedding. I’m not a homophobic person at all. But this is how the world now sees me.’

Alec described paparazzi as ‘predatory’ and claimed that they tried to ‘taunt him and catch him doing embarrassing things.’

‘Photographers today get right up in your face, my wife’s, my baby’s. They are baiting you,’ he stated.

‘You can tell they want to get into it with you. Some bump into me or block the entrance to my apartment, frustrating my neighbors (some of whom may regret that I live in their building).

‘I’m self-aware enough to know that I am to blame for some of this. I definitely should not have reacted the way I did in some of these situations.

‘I don’t have these issues with waiters, traffic cops, store clerks. I know there’s an impression that I’m someone who seeks to have violent confrontations with people. I don’t.

‘Do I regret screaming at some guy who practically clipped my kid in the head with the lens of a camera? Yeah, I probably do, because it’s only caused me problems.’

Alec also doubled down on his claims that he did not say the F-word, but that he actually said, ‘c***sucking motherf**ker.’

‘I’m sorry, I can’t let go of this – do people really, really believe that, when I shouted at that guy, I called him a “f****t” on-camera?’ he quipped.

‘Do you honestly believe I would give someone like TMZ… another club to beat me with?

‘In the recent video, you see me completely riled up and going after this guy and you hear me saying “c***suck” and then some bisyllabic word that sounds like “f***ot” -but wasn’t.’

He announced that it was the ‘last time he was going to talk about his personal life in an American publication ever again.’

‘If I offended anyone along the way, I do apologize. But the solution for me now is: I’ve lived this for 30 years, I’m done with it,’ he concluded.

Three months after his shocking Vulture essay, Alec had another run-in with the law.

He was reportedly stopped by police for riding his bike the wrong way on a New York City street, and ended up getting arrested after he became ‘belligerent’ with the officers.

He was charged with disorderly conduct.

‘He got belligerent and began arguing with the officers,’ a NYPD spokesperson told Time. ‘He was taken into custody at the 13th precinct [for identification].’

Afterwards, Alec tweeted, ‘[Police] arrested me and handcuffed me for going the wrong way on Fifth Ave.

‘Meanwhile, photographers outside my home ONCE AGAIN terrified my daughter and nearly hit her with a camera. The police did nothing.

‘New York City is a mismanaged carnival of stupidity that is desperate for revenue and anxious to criminalize behavior once thought benign.’

The case was later dismissed.

Alec later tweeted that the episode was ‘egregiously misstated,’ but he pleaded guilty to a second-degree harassment charge and agreed to attend an anger management program.

Wojciech went on to sue Alec for assault and slander, claiming the actor punched him in the jaw and shoved him.

Alec then countersued for defamation, claiming that Wojciech had fabricated his claim about being punched, when in fact he had been ‘lightly pushed.’

Both suits were settled out of court in 2022. The specific terms of the deal and the amounts involved have not been made public.

‘Alec Baldwin and Wojciech Cieszkowski have agreed to resolve all litigation concerning the incident that occurred between them on November 2, 2018,’ the men’s lawyers said in a joint statement at the time.

‘The terms of the resolution are private and confidential. Neither party will have any further comment.’

While rehearsing a scene, Alec had pointed a ‘prop firearm’ at her that then went off, hitting the 42-year-old wife and mother-of-one in the chest and killing her.

According to an affidavit, assistant director David Halls had taken the weapon off of a cart full of props and handed it to Alec, telling him it was a ‘cold gun,’ which meant it didn’t have any real bullets in it.

However, he told investigators that armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed had opened the gun for him to inspect before he gave it to Alec, but that he only remembered checking three out of five of the rounds.

While Alec claimed that he did not ‘pull the trigger,’ the FBI later ruled that it was unlikely that the gun fired on its own after undergoing a series of tests.

Even so, the actor told ABC in December 2021 that he was not responsible for what happened.

‘Someone put a live bullet in a gun, a bullet that wasn’t even supposed to be on the property,’ he said.

‘But I’m all for doing anything that will take us to a place where this is less likely to happen again.’

In January 2024, more than two years after the tragedy, it was revealed that Alec had been charged with involuntary manslaughter by a New Mexico grand jury.

Prosecutors renewed the charges that were originally filed and then dismissed in April 2023, after receiving a new analysis of the gun – which concluded that ‘the trigger had to be pulled or depressed sufficiently to release the fully cocked or retracted hammer of the evidence revolver.’

Rust armorer Hannah was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter on March 6, as the jury ruled that she negligently allowed a live bullet to get into the gun that Alec had used to accidentally shoot Halyna.

Alec pleaded not guilty, and the case was ultimately dismissed in July 2024. Alec was seen sobbing when the judge announced that it had been dismissed.

The judge said that there had been errors by the prosecution in the handling of evidence, which she said ‘impacted the fundamental fairness of the case.’

In video posted to social media, one protestor was seen shoving a phone in the actor’s face and demanding to know whether he supported Israel.

‘Because I’m in Hollywood?’ Alec responded. ‘You ask stupid questions. Ask me a smart question.’

Alec and the protestor continued to shout at each other before police led the actor away.

Then, in April 2024, Alec was caught on camera smacking the phone out of an anti-Israel protester’s hands after she accosted him inside a New York City coffee shop.

The protester, whose video was posted on X, repeatedly asked Alec to say free Palestine to the camera.

A visibly irritated Alec pleaded with a coffee shop employee to call the police and told the protester he would not say free Palestine.

‘F**k Israel, f**k Zionism, please say it,’ the protester demanded, before she began making references to the Rust movie set shooting.

Alec then asked her, ‘Can you do me one quick favor?’ before he smacked her phone from her hand.
