Halle Berry took to the stage to pay tribute to the musical acts featured in the 007 flicks over the years
UK singer Raye delivered a thunderous performance at the Oscars on Sunday night (March 2), but viewers called the James Bond tribute ‘a mess’.
It has been a successful weekend for rising star Raye, who won Best R&B act at the Brit Awards on Saturday (March 1). Raye was unable to accept the award in person as she was preparing to perform in front of Hollywood’s A-listers.
During the ceremony, Halle Berry took to the stage to pay tribute to the muscial acts featured in the 007 flicks over the years.
Paying tribute to departing Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson, Halle said: “They don’t just produce Bond movies, they were the heart soul of this franchise for decades.
“That signature mix of danger, style and intrigue is timeless.”
After showing clips of some of the best James Bond moments, The Substance actress Margaret Qualley performed a dance routine with a number of backing dancers.
Blackpink star Lisa belted out Bond theme tune Live And Let Die from band Wings, before rapper Doja Cat sang Dame Shirley Bassey’s Diamonds Are Forever and British singer Raye performed Adele’s Skyfall.
Those watching at home were full of praise for Raye, but were left unimpressed by Lisa and Doja Cat’s take on the Bond anthems.
@Iikeimrogue said: “They could’ve just had raye do the whole thing.” @kimsmokejin added: “Why didn’t they just have raye perform alone.”
@reputationfairy wrote: “Raye is the only one that kept that performance from being an absolute mess. a REAL vocalist.” @dyinlevi posted: “Raye being the only one who sung like it was an actual bond theme.”
@Dev0nne10 commented: “The Oscars could have taken Adele and Sam Smith to pay tribute since they were Oscar winners with their songs, but they took Lisa, who has zero vocal ability. Raye is the only talented one of that trio. #Oscars.”
The tribute was in honour of Broccoli and Wilson being the recipients of the Irving G Thalberg Memorial Award at the Governors Awards before announcing last month that Amazon MGM Studios will take over creative control of the popular British spy franchise.
