Spud Bros throw potatoes into the crowd at Big Weekend
BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend crowds were in a frenzy as two men scaled a van and began throwing potatoes. The festival is in its third day with headliners Mumford & Sons scheduled to bring the event to a close later this evening.
The festival, which takes place in a different UK location each year, boasts a star-studded lineup curated by the radio station. This year’s big names include Sam Fender, Mumford & Sons, Tate McRae, Sugababes, Haim, JADE, AJ Tracey, Myles Smith, Wet Leg, Blossoms, Lola Young and many more.
An estimated 100,000 fans are anticipated to attend the festival over the weekend. Shortly after singer Lola Young took to the Radio 1 Main Stage at 3pm, crowds gathered at the other end of the grounds near the entrance.
Two men were seen on top of the Spud Bros van hurling potatoes towards the crowds. The men asked the audience to wave their hands if they wanted to catch a potato, resulting in a sea of cheers.
The potatoes that were thrown were crotched and believed to be delivered by the Spud Bros team as a souvenir. Brothers Jacob Nelson, 29, and Harley Nelson, 22, have become somewhat of a global food phenomenon since they began posting on social media.
The siblings, from Preston in Lancashire, have over three million followers across their various platforms. Fans are invested in their daily vlogs, which primarily focus on serving jacket potatoes from their mobile shop, which they call their tram.
The British delicacy enjoyed a surge in popularity in 2024 as TikTok accounts shared behind-the-scenes videos about jacket potato vendors.
The brothers share point-of-view (POV) videos showing them building the meal with various fillings, including baked beans, cheese, chilli and tuna, while dishing out some “northern banter”.
Nina, the fiancée of Jacob, previously revealed a new site could be coming to the city. In a viral TikTok video, she said: “So today, myself and Jacob headed over to Liverpool to have a look for a new potential site for Spud Bros Express. How exciting?
“We were absolutely starving and the site was based in the centre of Liverpool ONE, so we decided to stop for food.”
The pair enjoyed a meal at Las Iguanas, a first for them. They then went to the shopping centre for a Costa. She ended the TikTok by showing the potential site, the now-closed Sblended at the top of Liverpool ONE opposite the Odeon cinema.
