Punjab Assembly Increases Leave Allowance of Ministers, Speaker and Deputy Speaker

Following the recent salary hike for ministers in Punjab, the government has also decided to increase the leave allowance for key public officeholders.

According to reports, the Punjab government has approved a proposal to equate the leave allowance for ministers, the Speaker, and the Deputy Speaker with their full monthly salaries. This amendment was passed in the Punjab Assembly as part of the Punjab Public Representatives Laws (Amendment) Bill 2025 during the recent assembly session.

The bill amends the Punjab Ministers (Salaries, Allowances, and Privileges) Act, 1975. Previously, ministers received reduced pay during their leave period—for instance, a minister drawing a monthly salary of Rs100,000 would receive only Rs74,000 during a month-long leave.

Under the new amendments, ministers will now receive their full monthly salary of Rs960,000 while on leave, instead of the previously reduced amount.

Similarly, the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, who previously received Rs37,000 during a month of leave while his salary was Rs125,000, will now be entitled to the full revised salary of Rs950,000.

The Deputy Speaker, who earlier received Rs37,000 in leave allowance against a salary of Rs120,000, will now get the full revised salary of Rs775,000 during any leave period.

These revisions were deemed necessary after the recent increase in salaries, as the previous leave allowances were based on outdated salary scales.
