A lookback at the President’s earlier speeches

In her speech last year, Murmu spoke of social justice as the top priority of the Narendra Modi-led Central government. “The Modi government has taken numerous initiatives for welfare of SC, ST and marginalised sections. Social justice is the top priority of the Modi government,” Murmu had said.

The President emphasised the words of Dr B R Ambedkar, stating that “political democracy cannot last unless there lies at the base of it social democracy”. She called for the reinforcement of affirmative action as a tool for inclusion and urged the people to reject “tendencies that fuel discord based on perceived social hierarchies”.

In 2023, in her first such address as President, ahead of the 74th Republic Day, President Murmu said India has succeeded as a democratic republic because various creeds and different languages have not divided it, but only united the country.

The first President from the tribal community, who took over in July 2022, Murmu lauded the Central government’s initiatives for women and the marginalised, and said gender equality was no longer a mere slogan. “During my visits to various states, educational institutions and while meeting delegations of various professionals, I am amazed by the confidence of young women. I have no doubt that they are the ones who will do the most to shape tomorrow’s India. What miracles cannot be achieved if this half of the population is encouraged to contribute to nation-building?”
