A raft of pothole-ridden roads and cracked footways in Renfrewshire will undergo a major makeover in the first year of a £90 million investment over the next decade.

Dozens of carriageways and pavements in Paisley, Renfrew, Johnstone and elsewhere have been earmarked for resurfacing by Renfrewshire Council in 2025/26.

A sum of £10.1m has been set aside for improvement works this financial year – a figure which will be succeeded by £80.3m over the following nine years.

Councillor Bruce MacFarlane, an SNP representative for Paisley Southeast, was thrilled see the programme unveiled by the local authority.

He added: “I have been pushing to ensure that my ward is prioritised in this road resurfacing programme.

“I am delighted to see that roads in my ward, including Thornly Park Drive, Park Road, Ballater Drive and Stanely Road, will benefit from resurfacing in the forthcoming financial year, with work already underway on Park Road.

“I am also encouraged to see that main roads in Paisley used by a large proportion of the town’s residents will also benefit, including Maxwellton Street and the George Street/Canal Street junction.

“This investment in Paisley Southeast builds upon the previous roads that have been resurfaced in the Paisley Southeast area in the previous two years, including Neilston Road, Burnfoot Crescent, Stoney Brae, Glenfield Road and Leabank Avenue, amongst others.

“I am confident that this resurfacing will benefit communities and I am sure residents will agree that this work is required.”

The resurfacing programme, which kicked off on Monday, is expected to cover a total of 53 carriageways and 31 footways. The council will also deliver extensive patching and surface dressing on rural roads.

Councillor Eddie Devine, who also represents Paisley Southeast, said: “I am absolutely delighted with what I’ve managed to get for my own ward.

“It’s been a long struggle. It’s like everything else, there isn’t enough money to do what we’d all like.

“However, it’s great to see Park Road will now be sorted because that’s been a shambles for a long, long time.”
