Pune city police launched the Pune Traffic Mitigation Internship Programme to make students aware about traffic problems as well as challenges faced by traffic police.
The programme was started by Amitesh Kumar, Commissioner of Pune City Police, in association with Pune Platform for Collaborative Response (PPCR), Top Management Consortium Foundation (TMCF) and Jehangir Hospital on Friday.
Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil, Dr Sudhir Mehta of Pinnacle Industries, Mukesh Malhotra of Weikfield Products Co. (I) Private Limited, Ajay Agarwal of My Page Pune, Nishit Kamath, a transportation system strategist and designer, Pune traffic mitigation initiative were present on the occasion, stated a press release issued on Friday.
“As a part of the Pune Traffic Mitigation Internship Programme the first batch of students from the Lexicon college in Pune were trained on different aspects of traffic situations in the city,” police said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) Amol Zende, police inspectors Sunil Gawli and Runal Mulla, sub inspector Raghatvan, implemented the program.
Police said interns were given knowledge about traffic challenges in the city, its management and future plans as well as technical aspects like Google Maps and CCTV cameras being used by traffic cops.
Interns were shown the adaptive traffic management system (ATMS) at Sinhagad Road and how information is shared to prevent accidents using “real time traffic monitoring and intelligent traffic system”, a press release stated. Interns were shown improvements made by the traffic control branch on the city’s 32 major roads.

Police said interns were also given field knowledge of how cops manage traffic at the most crowded and challenging junctions in Pune. They were informed about action taken by traffic cops against offences such as fancy number plates, speeding, riding triples on two wheelers and driving on the wrong side. Interns were also told about the e-challan system, towing vehicles and speed gun machines used by traffic police.
As stated in the press release, Dr Sham Gaikwad of Jehangir Hospital instructed interns on how first aid is to be provided to accident victims and persons who suffer cardiac arrests.
More than 70 students of Symbiosis School of Economic, Cybage and Indira School of Business Studies are expected to take part in the next batch of the Pune Traffic Mitigation Internship Programme, the press note stated.
