A planning application has been handed in to expand and improve facilities for cadets at an army reserve centre in Bridgend. The plans were handed in to the local authority in July of 2025 by the Reserve Forces and Cadets Association for Wales, for proposed works to the centre located off West Plas Road in Litchard.

Plans say they would focus on part of the site which is currently used as a cadet hut for the Army Cadet Force, and is occupied for several evenings each week.

If approved it would see works to the “modular hut” which would extend the building in order to increase the hall area and add additional classrooms and office spaces.

Floor plans within the application also show the building as having a new drill hall, toilets, kitchen, and flight simulator/media room once completed. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here

The plans read: “The existing building is of insufficient size and layout for this use and an increased hall area, additional classrooms, stores and offices are required.

“The RFCA proposes to accommodate this additional space requirement by extending the existing building to the west and reconfiguring the existing modular building to meet Joint Service Publication (JSP) standards as far as reasonably practical.

“The extension will provide an additional 114sqm of floor area and will comprise a flat roof, rendered masonry walls, UPVC windows and coated steel doors.

“Concrete steps with associated steel tubular handrails will be provided to the south of the building to provide a fire exit, with the original fire escape removed and blocked up.”

They add that they do not plan to make any alterations to pedestrian or vehicular access to the site, with the existing disabled access to be maintained.

The Bridgend reserve site is currently home to the 160 Divisional Support Company.

This is the only Army Reserve Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers unit in Wales.

The plans were handed in to Bridgend Council’s planning department in July 2025 where they will now be considered for approval. For the latest Bridgend news sign up to our newsletter here.
