Pictures show skeleton of building after being engulfed by flames as road remains closed

Pictures show the extent of a huge fire which engulfed an abandoned building. Firefighters were called to blaze on Barbauld Street in Warrington around 12.59pm on Monday, April 14.

Photos taken at the scene during the fire showed huge plumes of black smoke and orange flames coming from the building. People living nearby were asked to keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke.

Around three hours after the fire started, Cheshire Police extended the cordon and a number of roads around Warrington town centre, including Old Market Place and Rylands Street, were closed while fire crews continued to tackle the flames.

‌Cheshire Police confirmed there were no reports of any injuries. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service shared photos of the aftermath of the blaze, which showed the building fully exposed due to most of the roof being damaged.

Planks of wood, bricks and other debris can be seen covered in black soot, with the contents of the building being completely destroyed. According to traffic management system Inrix, Barbauld Street remains closed in both directions today, Tuesday, April 15, due to fire services between Old Market Place and Rylands Street.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said on Monday: “At around 1pm today, Monday, April 14, police were informed of a fire at an unoccupied building on Barbauld Street, Warrington. Officers at the scene and are assisting with road closures on Barbauld Street, Sankey Street, Bridge Street and Paper Lane whilst Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service extinguish the fire.

“There are no reports of any injuries and residents within the vicinity of the area are advised to keep all windows and doors closed for the time being. Anyone with any information about the incident should call Cheshire Constabulary on 101, quoting IML 2069367, or give the details via https://www.cheshire.police.uk/ro/report.”

The fire was put under control at around 7.25pm on Monday, however one fire engine and an aerial ladder platform stayed at the scene overnight.

In an update today at 9am, a spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue said: “Firefighters are still on scene and continuing to dampen down the area with a hose reel jet. This has been reduced to one fire engine.”
