The billowing smoke could be seen for miles
Extraordinary pictures show a huge plume of black smoke visible across Greater Manchester following a fire in Salford.
Fire crews raced to Duchy Road at around 1:50pm on Tuesday (April 8) to tackle the blaze, which broke out in a pile of abandoned tyres.
Emergency services remained on the scene for several hours to put out the flames and dampen the area.

Remarkable pictures showed the massive plume of smoke billowing into the air. Readers reported seeing it across Salford, Manchester city centre, and beyond.
The M.E.N. understands the fire broke out in some woodland and involved some ‘built-up’ waste.
Nearby rail lines were issued a ‘caution’ due to the blaze, but all trains continued to run.
It is understood that nobody was harmed during the incident.
“A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At shortly before 1.50pm on Tuesday (April 8) two fire engines from Agecroft, Broughton and Salford fire stations were called to a fire involving a large pile of tyres off Duchy Road, Salford.
“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are using jets to tackle the fire.”
The service later confirmed the flames had been extinguished and crews remained on site to dampen the area.
