Petrol station taped off and road closed following incident in north Manchester

Police, fire crews and paramedics raced to the scene in Newton Heath

A petrol station was blocked off and a road closed in north Manchester following an emergency incident on Sunday night (February 23).

Police, paramedics and fire crews raced to the scene of a car fire on St Mary’s Road in Newton Heath, near to the junction with Dean Lane and the petrol station, at around 7pm.

The Manchester Evening News understands there was one casualty involved. The nature of their condition has not yet been confirmed. Witnesses also reported seeing emergency crews working on a person at the scene.

Another witness saw police cars surrounding a white vehicle, and that the petrol station had been taped off along with the road following the incident on Sunday evening.

St Mary’s Road was closed off in both directions between Joyce Street and High Peak Street for a number of hours.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 7pm on Sunday 23 February, two fire engines from Blackley and Phillips Park fire stations were called to attend a vehicle fire on St Mary’s Road, Manchester.

“Crews arrived quickly and made the vehicle safe before departing after approximately one hour and twenty minutes at the scene.”

Further details surrounding the incident have not yet been confirmed. Greater Manchester Police have been approached for a statement.
