People fail to name Bengaluru’s official language; viral video sparks outrage | Trending News

A viral video has ignited outrage among Kannadigas on social media after it showed people unable to name Bengaluru’s official language.

Filmed in Mumbai, the video features a man asking random passersby what language is officially spoken in Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka. Responses varied widely as some guessed Hindi, while others said English, Malayalam, or Tamil and one person even mentioned Sanskrit. Shockingly, not a single person identified Kannada, the actual official language of Karnataka.

The video was posted on X by “Ice Candy Gopala” along with a caption, “It’s not their fault.”

The viral video caused a stir among the Kannadigas. “Send them back to school,” wrote one user in comments. Another user reacted, saying, “I think it reflects more on the state of education and knowledge of our nation. I am sure people will fail to link other cities, culture and language as well, unfortunately!”

A third individual wrote, “I bet 80% of them don’t even know Where’s BENGALURU! These GenZ kids lack Generel knowledge!” Another person came in defence, saying, “If you ask which is official language of Mumbai here in blore, most will say hindi . Not everyone is aware it’s Marathi. So it’s ok.”

The debate over the Kannada language on social media has only intensified over time. A few months ago, Zoho CEO Sridhar Vembu weighed in, saying that people living in Bengaluru should make an effort to learn Kannada, as not doing so is “disrespectful.” His comment came in response to a viral post showing two men wearing T-shirts that read “Hindi National Language.”
