In the wake of violent protests against the newly enacted Waqf Act in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday urged people to maintain peace and said that every body has the right to demonstrate peacefully, but none should take the law into their hands.
“Everybody has the democratic right to stage a peaceful protest with permission. I will request people not to take the law into their own hands. To protect the law, we have custodians and do not need any demon,” the chief minister said after inaugurating Kalighat skywalk.
“There will be many provocations but you should not be provoked,” she added.
Without naming any political organisation, the TMC chief said, “If I go to any other programme, they will change my title. Religion means respect, humanity, peace, culture, and harmony. There is nothing bigger religion than to love human being. If you love people, you can conquer everybody,” she added.
Stating that the new Waqf law was brought in by the BJP government at the Centre, the chief minister said answers should be sought from the Central government.
“We did not enact the law that many people have been protesting against it. The law was made by the Central government. So, the answers should be sought from the central government,” the TMC supremo stated.
