Man Utd remain in the bottom half of the Premier League and Ruben Amorim has faced scrutiny since his arrival.
Paul Scholes believes Ruben Amorim will receive “plenty time” to turn Manchester United around, despite Amorim voicing concerns he will not be afforded patience to rebuild the club.
The Europa League is United’s only hope of winning a trophy this season and a triumph in the competition would also grant entry into the Champions League for 2025/2026.
United are currently 14th in the Premier League and qualifying for Europe via their league position is highly unlikely, which further outlines the importance of winning the Europa League.
Amorim is hoping his side can claim European glory to salvage a nightmare season, but he seemed to be feeling the pressure when he spoke after 1-1 drawing against Real Sociedad.
With United due to host Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, Amorim was asked if he saw similarities between himself and the Spaniard and responded: “I don’t feel that.
“I will not have the time Arteta had. I feel that. It’s a different club. So we just need to survive with the players [against Arsenal] on Sunday and we are doing these games. I think it’s a different club. I think in that aspect, the way Arteta dealt with that is an inspiration for everybody but I will not have the time like Arteta had.”
However, Scholes was on punditry duty for TNT Sports in San Sebastian and was more upbeat about Amorim’s future. “I don’t think there is much pressure on him yet,” said Scholes.
“I think he is alright. He is going to get plenty of time now, he needs to turn this club around and has not really signed his players. There are a lot of areas to improve and he needs three or four transfer windows, it will take a lot of time to get the club back to where it should be.
“I think they have to stick with him. Where else can they go? He is a bright young manager, speaks well and there is so much going on in the background which cant be helpful. Let’s give him time and back him to move the team forwards.”
Amorim is expected to pick his strongest side against Arsenal this weekend, but some fans have questioned whether the 40-year-old should prioritise next week’s second leg against Sociedad.
United will play Sociedad at Old Trafford just four days after facing Arsenal in the Premier League.
