A major scam has left hundreds of Pakistanis stranded in Cambodia, where they are being held hostage and forced into illegal work after being promised high-paying jobs.
FIA Karachi Director Nauman Siddiqui stated that social media ads promote jobs in Cambodia’s IT sector, call centers, and engineering fields. Indian agents target many Pakistanis, especially from Gulf countries like the UAE and Saudi Arabia, and lure them with salaries ranging from $1,000 to $2,000.
According to FIA sources, similar scams are operating in Lahore and Karachi. More than 20 Pakistanis, including a woman, were recently deported from Cambodia after contacting the embassy for help.
SHO Sohail Mahmood Sheikh of the Anti-Human Trafficking Circle said 14 inquiries and two cases have been registered. Victims reported that their passports were seized upon arrival, and they were forced into fraudulent call center jobs.
Following complaints from the Pakistani mission, Cambodian authorities rescued over 100 Pakistanis in a recent operation. However, many remain trapped in remote areas.
Officials say most victims belong to Punjab, and FIA is investigating the role of foreign nationals based in Karachi and Lahore.
