The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) has been hit with another controversy as multiple foreign players, including Pakistan’s Mohammad Haris, have been left stranded at a team hotel in Dhaka due to non-payment of dues and canceled return tickets by the Durbar Rajshahi franchise.
Mohammad Haris, alongside Afghanistan’s Aftab Alam, West Indies’ Mark Deyal and Miguel Cummins, and Zimbabwe’s Ryan Burl, found themselves unable to leave the ongoing BPL season in Bangladesh after a travel agent canceled their flights over unpaid dues. Despite multiple attempts, the players were unable to reach the franchise owners, who reportedly ignored their calls.
With no resolution in sight, Mohammad Haris reached out to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), urging them to intervene. Following the PCB’s swift action, the BPL administration issued Haris his return ticket, allowing him to leave the country. However, the remaining foreign players continue to wait for their flights home, with no clear response from the franchise management.
Mohammad Haris last played a game in the BPL on January 23rd as part of the Durbar Rajshahi squad.
BPL’s non-payment situation has further escalated in recent weeks. Reports indicate that most foreign players from Durbar Rajshahi have not received their full payments, with only two players receiving a mere 25% of their pending dues. Adding to their frustration, the affected players have also not been paid their daily allowances for the last 11 days.
Durbar Rajshahi’s local players had already boycotted a practice session in Chittagong over unpaid wages earlier last month. Despite assurances from team owners, the situation has not improved. With the BPL facing increasing criticism over its franchise vetting process, the league’s credibility is at risk. The handling of the Durbar Rajshahi debacle has not only impacted player trust but has also raised serious questions about financial governance in the tournament.
For now, as Mohammad Haris makes his way home from the BPL, his fellow foreign players remain stranded, waiting for their rightful payments and tickets out of Bangladesh.
