Outlander fans ‘missed’ Master Raymond return clue from Faith episode

Outlander fans are still reeling from the season seven finale

Outlander enthusiasts are revisiting earlier seasons of the popular series as the Droughtlander continues. The show concluded with a heart-wrenching cliffhanger, revealing that Claire Fraser’s (portrayed by Caitríona Balfe) firstborn daughter Faith was alive, despite being stillborn.

Claire, delirious from a gunshot wound, experienced visions of Master Raymond (Dominique Pinon), who offered her an ambiguous apology. This apology hinted at the possibility of Faith’s survival, reinforced by a locket inscribed with the name.

Master Raymond last appeared in season two’s episode titled Faith, where he saved Claire’s life by secretly visiting her in the church hospital where she was on the brink of death.

He risked much to heal Claire, affirming their friendship and mutual support.

Furthermore, Claire later saved his life when King Louis XV (Lionel Lingelser) sought to identify practitioners of sorcery and summoned her as La Dame Blanche, reports the Scottish Daily Express.

In addition to these events, Master Raymond sent Claire anonymous packages in Scotland containing various items that would later prove significant in her life. These included bear finger bones, a nod to Jamie Fraser’s (Sam Heughan) Native American name, Bear Killer.

These gifts suggested that Master Raymond had knowledge of Claire’s future and what lay ahead.

Master Raymond, a character from the Outlander series, vanished from the pages following Dragonfly in Amber, only being alluded to anonymously in A Breath of Snow and Ashes. This made his reappearance an unexpected twist for many followers, who had thought they’d seen the last of him.

Although he was missing in action in the novels, aficionados might not have picked up on the subtle cue of his return in the show’s second season, where he hinted at a future encounter.

Outlander scriptwriter Toni Graphia reflected on Raymond’s words: “I like what he says, ‘We’ll see each other again.’ He told her a few episodes ago, in my other episode, ‘You will see Frank again.'”.

“And here he says, ‘We will all see each other again.’ I don’t really know what that means, but it sounded mystical and he says to her, ‘Have faith’.”

These enigmatic words were a nod towards his eventual comeback in the seventh season.

Expanding on this during the Official Outlander Podcast, Graphia stated: “I purposely had him say, ‘Have Faith,’ because of course that’s what Mother Hildegarde has named the baby.

“The baby had to have a name and be baptised to even be buried on the church property.”

Even though Graphia professed uncertainty about the line’s meaning, it unquestionably left the door ajar for Master Raymond to emerge once more.

What’s more, this dialogue cleverly set the stage for exploring the alternate Faith timeline, where Master Raymond saves the infant by transporting her to another time period, allowing her to grow up in a different age.

This was a storyline that Outlander author Diana Gabaldon had intended to delve into through a graphic novel, but time constraints prevented her from doing so. However, fans can now witness this narrative unfold in the series, which will henceforth deviate from the original books.
