Liverpool return to Champions League action on Wednesday night when they take on Paris Saint-Germain. The game will take place at the Parc des Princes, with the return match at Anfield taking place a week later.

After finishing at the top of the league phase, this is probably not the draw Arne Slot and Co. hoped for. Of the squad that lifted Liverpool’s sixth-ever European Cup in Madrid in 2019, only seven remain.

And below the ECHO looks at the latest news in anticipation of what could be another historic Champions League tie for Liverpool.

Dembele message

PSG have been in emphatic goalscoring form heading towards this upcoming tie, which is not the news the Reds would have wanted. The Parisiens have netted 21 times in their last four outings.

Speaking after their latest result – a 4-1 Ligue 1 win over Lille – on-fire winger Ousmane Dembele told DAZN: “We played a very good game today. We are preparing well for what is to come (Liverpool).

“Since the beginning of the season, (Luis Enrique) has been telling us to play good football. Everyone is participating, whether it’s the midfielders, defenders or attackers. Everyone wants to be decisive. We are in a very good dynamic, we will try to keep it as long as possible. We are having a blast!

“Everyone attacks, everyone defends. We are a very united team, that gives results like that. It’s just fun for 90-95 minutes.”

With 26 goals to his name this season, the Frenchman added: “We know it’s going to be a tough match. It’s the Champions League. Liverpool finished first, they’re also confident. It’s going to be a great show.”

Referee in Paris

UEFA have confirmed Italian referee Davide Massa will be in charge of tomorrow’s last-16 clash at the Parc des Princes.

The 43-year-old has officiated 23 Champions League fixtures since his debut European call-up in the 2018/19 season. None of those have been beyond the round of 16, nor have any involved Liverpool at any stage.

His record with English teams has resulted in seven wins out of 17, approximately a 53.8 percent win rate, whilst he has overseen PSG once already in this year’s competition – their 4-1 over VfB Stuttgart in the league phase.
