A 57-year-old Ottawa man has been sentenced to six years in prison and must pay restitution to the victim of several child sex offences.

Police say Brent McMullen, 57, pleaded guilty in January to charges of sexual interference and making child pornography among other offences.

The charges followed a lengthy investigation that began in 2022 headed by Ottawa Police Service’s Internet Child Exploitation Unit, with participation by the RCMP, the U.S. Homeland Security Investigations and the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada.

In addition to the prison sentence, police said McNulty must pay $2,000 in restitution to the victim. The Canadian Centre for Child Protection and the department of justice in the Philippines will monitor and administer the process, police said.

“This is the first time such a sentence (involving restitution) has been handed down in Canada,” police said.
