Ottawa firefighters battled a pair of fires at area residences overnight.

Shortly after 2 a.m., firefighters were called to the 9,000-block of Victoria Street east of Metcalfe, where heavy smoke was reported at a single-family home.

Ottawa Fire Services said the fire was in an area of the city with no hydrants, so crews initiated a water shuttle system to bring water to the scene using tankers.

Firefighters declared the fire under control at 2:43 a.m.

Earlier, firefighters were called to a multi-unit residential building in the 100-block of Cumberland Street in Lowertown.

Several 911 calls reported flames visible from the kitchen in one of the units in the building.

Firefighters initiated a fast attack and advanced a hose line inside the building. Crews also completed two searches and found no occupants inside.

The fire was extinguished and contained to the area of origin before it could spread.

No injuries were reported at either fire.
