OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is reportedly planning a significant organizational overhaul that would remove control from its nonprofit board. This move comes as the artificial intelligence firm seeks to attract new investors and streamline its governance structure.

As part of this restructuring, CEO Sam Altman is expected to receive his first equity stake in the company.

The news coincides with a major leadership change at OpenAI. Mira Murati, the company’s long-serving Chief Technology Officer, announced her departure on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Late last year, the nonprofit board was at the center of controversy when CEO Sam Altman was briefly ousted before being reinstated after intervention from key partners, including Microsoft.

The proposed changes to OpenAI’s structure are seen as an effort to streamline decision-making and attract additional investment. However, the move also raises questions about the company’s commitment to its original mission of developing safe and beneficial artificial intelligence.

Despite the organizational change, the company’s non-profit arm will remain and own a minority stake in the profit company.

In a statement shared with Reuters, OpenAI confirmed that the company remains “focused on building AI that benefits everyone” and that it will be “working with our board to ensure that we’re best positioned to succeed in our mission.” Though the statement says that the non-profit arm will continue to exist, it doesn’t say how much control it will retain over the profit wing.

The timeline for this structural change remains uncertain.
