The motion called upon North Lanarkshire Council to acknowledge that the current scheme, which offers a £1,500 incentive to council tenants moving into smaller homes, had a low rate of uptake.
North Lanarkshire Council has agreed to review the financial reward available to tenants who choose to downsize their homes, with a view to making larger properties available to families in need.
At a meeting of the full council, a motion from Kirsten Larson and Richard Sullivan went unopposed.
The motion called upon the council to acknowledge that the current scheme, which offers a £1,500 incentive to council tenants moving into smaller homes, had a low rate of uptake.
Due to the motion being agreed, the council will now consider the cost and feasibility of more than doubling that reward to £3,500 for those willing to move out of three bedroomed homes to smaller properties, freeing up the larger homes for families who require the extra space.
Part of the text read: “The purpose of the proposed adjustment is to further motivate eligible residents to participate in the scheme, thereby improving the availability of larger homes for families and contributing to more efficient use of our housing stock.
“The Council instructs the relevant departments to bring forward a report which encompasses funding options to a future meeting of the Housing Committee”.
