Afternoon tea is an indulgent treat that’s perfect for a special occasion – and with Mother’s Day just around the corner it could be the ideal opportunity to enjoy some freshly baked scones, delicate finger sandwiches and expertly baked sweet treats. Whether you opt for a traditional cream tea or a more contemporary take on the classic menu, Liverpool has plenty of options to enjoy.

Many of the city’s best loved afternoon tea venues offer vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options, meaning there’s a menu to suit every dietary preference or requirement. All of the menus also offer the option to upgrade the afternoon tea offering with a glass of something fizzy, or a carefully curated cocktail.

We rounded up some of the best afternoon tea options on offer in the city, from sky-high restaurants with stunning views over Liverpool’s waterfront, to atmospheric cellar bars crafted by Michelin Guide recognised chefs. Prices range from £19.95 to £33.75 for the standard menu in each venue.

Cuthbert’s

Located on Mount Pleasant, Cuthbert’s has a number of different afternoon teas for customers to choose from, including the blossoms and blooms afternoon tea, Mother’s Day high tea, baby shower and hen do afternoon teas and a new Easter special, which is yet to be confirmed.

The spring themed blossoms and blooms afternoon tea features treats such as a brownie with flavours inspired by the viral Dubai pistachio kunafa chocolate flavours. There is also blackberry mascarpone cream choux and amoretti cookies.

Miniature sandwiches include poached salmon, dill, cucumber, crème fraiche and caviar pearls, roast beef, horseradish whip, rocket and parmesan, and coronation chicken. Savoury treats also include a fig and Roquefort cheese quiche, and a caramelised onion sausage roll.

The scones are a twist on the usual flavours, with a raspberry and white chocolate scone served with clotted cream and pink gim jam. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten free menus are also available.

Priced at £32 per person and £16 per child, there’s the option to switch to a plain sandwich menu to cover any dislikes.

Hope Street Hotel

Served inside the iconic London Carriage Works restaurant, the Hope Street Hotel afternoon tea features an array of freshly baked cakes and delicacies with finger sandwiches, a warm scone, fresh berries, clotted cream and preserves, served with a choice of loose leaf tea. Customers can make it special and upgrade to a glass of prosecco, champagne or Cuvée.

Afternoon tea at Hope Street is served Monday to Thursday 12 noon – 4pm and Friday to Sunday 12 noon – 3pm. It is priced at £29.50 per person.

You couldn’t ask for a better backdrop than Liverpool’s iconic waterfront – and the views from Panoramic 34 are truly breath-taking. Customers can enjoy the incredible views along with a traditional afternoon tea served in the restaurant.

Diners can enjoy afternoon tea at the cities highest restaurant between 12pm and 2.30pm on Tuesdays to Saturdays, and between 12pm and 5pm on Sundays. For customers wishing to eat in the cocktail lounge, afternoon tea is available between 12pm and 5pm.

The traditional afternoon tea is priced at £32 per person and features coronation chicken sandwiches, roast gammon, Colemans mustard and orange blossom honey sandwiches and Lang’s Farm egg and black truffle mayonnaise and Wirral watercress sandwiches. Cakes and pastries on offer include a yuzu and matcha green tea macaroon, and a chocolate and tonka delice.

The luxury afternoon tea costs £45 per person, and includes a glass of champagne, wine or a selected cocktail from a list of classics. The traditional and luxury menus are available for vegetarians, vegans and customers who require gluten free meals.

Customers at Oh Me Oh My can savour a carefully selected range of loose-leaf teas, freshly baked scones, delicate sandwiches, and sweet treats. Afternoon Tea is available on Thursdays and Fridays through the week and selected dates at the weekend at the city centre venue.

The standard afternoon tea costs £26.95 per person, with prosecco it is £32.45, champagne increases the price to £35.25 and afternoon tea with a cocktail is £34.25.

On selected weekend dates, Oh Me Oh my hosts a Disco Afternoon Tea, where the classic flavours of high tea are served up with a side of lively tunes from in-house DJ, Jimmy the Gent.

The menu changes seasonally, and vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options are available.

Titanic Hotel

Afternoon tea at the Titanic Hotel is served at Stanley’s Bar and Grill, overlooking the waters of Stanley Dock. The Titanic Hotel’s afternoon tea includes finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones with fresh clotted cream and sweet treats and cakes created by the restaurant’s expert pastry chef – including gin and tonic macaroons, a praline choux bun, Victoria sponge and more.

Priced at £28.50 per person, there are also vegetarian, vegan and gluten free menus available.

The Art School Cellars

Since The Cellars opened in December 2017, Chef Paul Askew’s subterranean ‘cocktail’ sanctuary has offered afternoon tea featuring sandwiches and sweets homemade in The Art School kitchen with the same amount of love as a tasting menu.

The restaurant offers three levels of Afternoon Tea: Standard, Prosecco, and Champagne – each of which include a choice of tea or coffee.

Available Wednesday to Saturday from 2.00pm to 4.00pm, the standard menu is priced at £32.50. Handmade sandwiches include corn-fed Whitchurch free-range chicken with vadouvan curry and mango, spring onion, mayonnaise and spring onion, with desserts including a cherry and almond gateaux.

The Ivy

Priced at £33.75 per person, The Ivy’s afternoon tea is available at the Castle Street branch of the chain’s newly opened Liverpool venue. The menu is served every day from 3pm until 5pm. Customers can add a glass of champagne for a special afternoon tea priced at £43.75 per person.

Savouries include a chicken Milanese and truffle cream brioche roll and a lightly curried egg finger sandwich, with warm fruit scones to follow. The sweet treats include the e Ivy chocolate bombe with milk foam and gold flake, and mini chocolate truffles with a liquid salted caramel centre.

Hard Days Night Hotel

The Hard Days Night Hotel has an afternoon tea that’s perfect for Beatles fan. John’s Bar features Beatles themed artwork and is also the location for one of the hotel’s ‘must see’ images. – taken on Childwall Fiveways, the image captures some of the Merseybeat groups of the 60’s including of course the Fab Four themselves.

Customers can also view artefacts, pictures, books and poems from those who were part of The Beatles story , among them Yoko Ono , Pete Best, Stuart Sutcliffe, Linda McCartney and of course John , Paul , George and Ringo.

Priced at £19.95 per person, the afternoon tea includes beef and horseradish sandwiches, fruit scones and a selection of cakes.

Allerton

Available Monday to Saturday between 12.30 pm to 4pm, the Old Stables afternoon tea package includes everything you need to enjoy a delicious treat for £25 per person.

Cakes include a glazed strawberry cheesecake, a carrot cake and a raspberry macaron sable tart. The sandwiches include roasted chicken breast with gem lettuce and Caesar dressing, smoked Applewood cheese with spring onion mayonnaise and baked ham with wholegrain mustard mayonnaise.
