The series is perfect for fans of the beloved 2010s series Narcos
A new Mexican crime drama that’s ‘based on true events’ and is expected to storm the Netflix charts in the coming weeks.
It’s been a summer to remember for the streaming service to date, with multiple major shows dropping over the past few months.
Leading the top ten most watched shows at the time of writing is the final season of Squid Game, which has already broken multiple records.
After breaking onto the streamer’s list of its most popular non-English-language series of all time in just three days, the season has now reached 106.3 million views in 10 days.
Despite the ending proving to be a tad controversial, the Korean drama has achieved more views within two weeks than any other Netflix series.
Rounding out the rest of the streamer’s top five is fantasy drama The Sandman, crime series The Waterfront, Spanish youth drama Olympo and the third season of Ginny and Georgia.
Looking to reach similar heights is a series that’s perfect for fans of Narcos and became available to stream on Wednesday (July 9).
The Gringo Hunters follows a team of elite agents who specialize in capturing American criminals trying to escape justice by crossing the Mexican border.
In a unique twist to the stereotypes surrounding the American border, the series isn’t afraid to throw humour into its digs towards a certain president.
Expertly mixing drama, suspense and action, the series is similar to Emily Blunt’s acclaimed 2015 film Sicario.
Adrian Grünberg serves as part of the show’s creative team, having directed Rambo: Last Blood and worked on Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto, Oliver Stone’s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and Tom Cruise film Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
Leading the cast is Harold Torres, a Mexican actor who is best known for his work on ZeroZeroZero and has been nominated for the Ariel Award for Best Actor three times.
Filling out the rest of the cast is Mayra Hermosillo, Manuel Masalva, Andrew Leland Rogers, Héctor Kotsifakis, Dagoberto Gama and Regina Nava.
The series is inspired by true events and an investigation by The Washington Post about the existence of the International Liaison Unit.
The specialized group of Mexican police officers were created in 2002, working in the shadows to locate foreign criminals hiding from their own justice systems.
According to the article, the group has worked with the FBI to deport more than 1,600 fugitives, including millionaires involved in financial fraud and highly dangerous criminals.
All 12 episodes of The Gringo Hunters are available to steam now on Netflix
