‘Everyone’s a bit shaken’
Residents on an east Manchester estate where shots were fired say they’ve been left terrified. A gunman opened fire on Tunstall Street in Openshaw at around 2am in the early hours of Tuesday morning (March 25).
Thankfully no one was injured, but the front window of a property was smashed and a car damaged. Detectives are now hunting those responsible.
The family who live at the house had been left ‘shaken’ Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News today, some of those living nearby said they had also been left shocked and scared.
“I am scared” a single-mum, who did not want to be named, said. “I am not going outside. I need some stuff but I am too scared to go out after this incident, I am not going anywhere. It’s left me feeling that worried, mainly for my child.”
“I wasn’t in at the time, and I’m glad, I think it would have terrified me. I might have not wanted to live here” a neighbour said.
“It’s scary. It’s a new estate and there are a lot of children that live on here. They often play out on the road. I have an eight-year-old little girl. We have a neighbourhood WhatsApp group chat and I think we’ve all been left shaken.
“It’s scary that that would actually happen on our street. I just hope the police get to the bottom of it and catch whoever did it. “
A man who lives nearby said: “It was a surprise to say the least. I saw all the police and officers came round asking for any CCTV or doorbell footage. But they just told us there had been a serious incident.
“When I heard what had happened I was a bit shocked. I grew up in Moss Side, so it’s not like I’m not used to this stuff, but it’s the first time I’ve had it happen on my street.”
Whilst, another resident said: “I think all the residents are shocked. It is a quiet area, and it’s not something you ever expect is going to happen. I think everyone’s a bit shaken.”
GMP have urged anyone who heard the ‘disturbance’ or who may have relevant camera footage to urgently get in touch with them.
Detective Inspector Terina Arthern from the force’s North Manchester district, said: “We know that this incident will cause considerable concern amongst the community, and we have a team of officers working tirelessly to identify those responsible and bring them in to question.
“You will likely see additional officers in the area in the coming days whilst we investigate, if you have any questions or concerns, please speak to them.
“I would also take this opportunity to highlight that the intelligence we receive from members of the public can be of great assistance to our investigation, so I would encourage anyone with any information in relation to this type of activity to come forward and speak with police. Any information will be handled with the utmost discretion and sensitivity.”
Anyone with information is asked to call GMP on 101 on 0161 856 1146 or 101 quoting log 453 of 25/03/25. Alternatively, information can be passed, anonymously, to Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
