Liverpool City Region Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram has released a statement after a car drove into pedestrians as fans celebrated Liverpool Football Club’s Premier League victory parade in the city centre.

A car has crashed into people on Water Street just after 6pm on Monday, May 26. Merseyside Police have arrested a 53-year-old white British man after the incident, which has resulted in 27 patients taken to hospital, four of the injured were children. 20 patients were treated at the scene that did not require hospital treatment.

Mayor Steve Rotheram has said in a statement from Water Street this morning: “There is still a police presence here and a tent up at the scene and the police will continue to carry out their investigations until they are satisfied that they have collected all the evidence and that they can open Water Street and the surrounding.”

“Yesterday is a complete contrast to the scene now, there is hardly anybody on the streets and yesterday there was up to one million people perhaps on these streets all with one thing in mind to show the football team that they love the admiration, the euphoria at winning the Premier League and watch their heroes go by and that’s what happened to the large extent.

“This was post the celebrations because the coach had gone past and then we saw the car at the footage that everybody has seen on social media.”

Mr Rotheram then thanked emergency services and the people of Liverpool following the horrific incident. He said: “I want to thank the police and all the emergency services but also those people who went the extra mile because there was a whole host of people who pulled out all the stops, for instance some of my staff and some of the railway staff, bus staff, who got passengers home way way after the networks had closed down and they came in on their day off to help and assist them.

“Along with the emergency services at the scene who did a brilliant job and of course the police. They did a wonderful job in all the arrangements for this. But there was a whole host of people, ordinary Scousers, ordinary people from the city region who also need to be recognised and thanked.”

He added: “We need the police to conclude their investigations, that’s what we are waiting for and then the road will be opened and things go back to normal.

“Except of course those people who witnessed what happened here and certainly with the four people who are still seriously injured in hospital and they are our main concern and all the focus should be on them.”
